Porto cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win on Sunday night with both goals coming before the break. The goal line at seven was never under serious threat.
Bet 10 – Wolves vs Blackburn Rovers – Friday 14th August at 8pm
Wolves finished bottom of the Premier League last season with only 20 points, but their 38.8 xPTS was almost double their actual return, one of the biggest gaps between performance and results in the division. That suggests this was a considerably better side than the final table showed.
Recruitment planning for the Championship also began during the winter window, giving the rebuild more structure than the usual post-relegation overhaul, and Wolves start the season as second favourites for the title.
Preseason strengthened the case. Four wins from five included successive 3-0 victories over Racing Santander and Port Vale, while Kieran Trippier, Ladislav Krejci, Raul Jimenez and Adam Armstrong add proven quality. Fer Lopez has also looked sharp after returning from his loan spell.
The concern came against Port Vale, where Wolves conceded 1.93 xGA and three big chances despite winning 3-0, but there has otherwise been plenty to like.
Blackburn's numbers offer far less hidden upside. Their 55.54 xPTS against 52 actual points suggests last season's 20th-place finish was a fair reflection of their level. They start this campaign among the leading relegation candidates, while summer recruitment has been limited. Sam Morsy provides experience in midfield, but Blackburn have done little else to significantly improve a squad that struggled last season.
Their preseason included a 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, while Tony Mowbray admitted his side missed “half a dozen golden chances” even during their Carabao Cup win at Burton. Blackburn generated 3.59 xG and five big chances in that game, so chance creation was encouraging, but converting those opportunities remains a concern.
This is ultimately a title favourite at home to a side expected to be involved towards the other end of the Championship. Wolves have the stronger underlying numbers, greater squad depth and better preseason results. The draw remains the main danger on the opening weekend, which makes the protection particularly useful. My preferred angle is Wolves draw no bet.
