Monday was a very quiet day, with one selection put. But we walked away with an easy winner.

Steel Ally was ridden prominently, which is always a positive sign on chasing debut. That shows plenty of confidence that he knows how to jump a fence.

His jumping wasn't perfect, but it was good enough to defeat a solid field.

He jumped out to his left, which is not ideal for a right-handed track. He was long at a few and in close on others, but all in all, it was a solid chasing debut.

Once again, Sam Thomas proved what a quality trainer he is. His strike rate is ridiculous, and when the money is down, they rarely get it wrong.

Crystal Jet 11/8 (1pt) – Huntingdon 3.46

Tuesday's racing is no better than Monday's, and Huntingdon's card is fairly woeful. It's that bad — the only highlight I could see was Crystal Jet on the bumper.

If you've been a follower of the thread since I took over a couple of years ago, you'd know I'm not a huge fan of bumpers and rarely have tips in those races.

However, Toby Bulgin has unleashed some nice-looking bumper horses over the last season. This year, he has had a winner in the same colours as Crystal Jet.

Crystal Jet ran well in a junior bumper a couple of weeks ago, and I'm hoping with that experience and fitness he will be a tough nut to crack.

Unfortunately, Brian Hughes is in the saddle, whom I'm not a huge fan of. Sometimes you've got to ignore the jockey if you like the horse. Thankfully, Brian has a good record of four wins from twelve rides with Toby Bulgin, and this isn't a track which Brian visits often, so it points towards a victory.

Spike Jones 7/2 (1pt) – Lingfield 1.52

In a race where questions are to be asked about fitness, and whether certain horses are as good over hurdles as over fences. Spike Jones stuck out like the most likely winner.

Spike Jones defied a longer layoff last year to win this race. Therefore, we know he can win first time out, and chances are that this has been an early-season target.

If the ground gets slightly worse, we know that he handles the ground.

Benjamin Macey gets in the saddle and removes a very handy 7lbs. With the claim removing a solid amount of weight, it puts Spike Jones on a handicap mark which is below what it was when he won this twelve months ago.
