With the Racing League concluding, hopefully I am not punished for my relatively straightforward/obvious selections. They are so as I have been very pushed for time, most rivals haven't been checked but all in all, it's a better L15 than is typical given the quality of the racing.
It feels wrong not to put up a single Murphy, Osborne or Muscutt ride. Add to that Billy Loughnane is being seriously backed to win the jockey title and yet I have gone with perhaps his most unlikely runner. I am also wary of how close to the top of the market most of mine are, given they can be pure smoke and mirrors at times. All in all, I wanted much more refined selections for you but we're in credit and are happy enough.
Attacanter Racing tips
Sondad 15/2 four places – 18.43 Southwell
In such a competitive affair, I could spin quite a few horses but Sondad has seen some support, and money at this event should hold more weight than is typical, leading the market in some places, the price is still generous on 365. Team Yorkshire sit bottom of the table but that doesn't mean much and Easterby owes us big time.
The horse won over C&D last time, he was shunted along over 2f out but did the business in reasonable fashion. A wider draw today shouldn't be that concerning given the hold up run last time, gaps should appear. A four pound rise is shouldered today, the 2nd came out and won next time whilst still looking green, a horse connected with Charyn. SDS wasn't on but was for the win, but let's not split hairs.
Grenham Bay ran Billyjoy close over C&D, he also placed here over 7f which may suit in a frenetic race. Jungle Land was an easy pick on paper whilst Northern Spirit 10/1 was 2nd at this meeting last week, doing his best work late, the winner had won previously, the two he beat came out and won, based on that he is a nice price. Northern Spirit's price has just collapsed as I finalised the write up, his run last time was visually very appealing.
Great Bedwyn 13/2 four places – 20.10 Southwell
As mentioned, many horses here tonight can be spun favourably, I picked this horse to inspect first based on his market support from a well renowned trainer and jockey.
The horse has had two races this month coming here off an 8 day break, I have slight trepidation that that could be his undoing. The weight and widest stall is also against him, however enough rivals carry similar whilst he can be dropped in given his wins have came when held up, he should be fine.
A winner at Newbury in mid July, he is now back over that distance having been tried over 1m6f then 2m last week at York. This will be his third run of the month, it may easily be too much for him but he hasn't done much wrong and even if it loses, his form is easily justified and a better selection than a fair few I have put up.
He nosed off Lieber Power carrying 7lbs more, the horse won either side of that before two neck 2nds, one in the Windsor Racing League to a horse completing a hattrick, the other at the Ebor meeting to well regarded Shadow Dance. He's 5lbs above that is which could make a difference but having checked enough rivals, he is still the play off.
Grand Karat 4/1 four places – 18.14 Southwell
Kodi Lion has bang tidy form off his Ascot run, Pedro Valentino was 2nd, he has won either side of that. The 3rd & 4th both came in off a win. He then finished 3rd next time at Newcastle's Racing League meeting. He was nibbled early but is now back out with Grand Karat seeing the bulk of the money, fortunately, he has held his price on 365.
It's all relative but Kodi Lion will now carry 19lbs more up against connections who saddled the winner last time. Grand Karat represents them, he won nicely by 2.5 lengths over C&D a month ago, the second, Another Investment is in this with a 13lb weight pull at a much nicer price, given the bet type he could have been chanced despite my selection running away from him at the end. Likely something is lurking.
Thunder Moor 16/1 four places – 20.40 Southwell
Nazron 4/1 is extremely hard to ignore, perhaps the best trainer at the meeting with a title chasing jockey. He should be under serious consideration and looks much the safer play but I am happy to risk it. Equity Law has ran poor of late but did beat Shagraan once upon a time.
The oddsmakers and inside punters know full well Billy will be pushing for the title, he's effectively near enough guaranteed to go close with a few so you would think the price of this one was an ominous sign. If he's already had success on the night, that would be a mark against his chances going on past experience.
Top weight is very concerning, but he beat the reopposing Moulin Booj and Miss Attitude at the Yarmouth league meeting, he is 1lb better off with both given they came 1st and 2nd when next seen. Despite this we still get a price, which I hope is because of his 14/16 at Windsor over 6f next time, and not that the form is weak.
Our main hopes are pinned on the fact a return to 5f will suit. I overlooked the weight and rating hike as he won this very race last year off 10lbs lower – which still gives him a chance to hit the places. I am sure Billy has stronger chances but he is in, Great Max was likeable.
– Advised bet – Eachway Lucky15
WHAT IS A LUCKY 15 BET?
A Lucky 15 bet consists of 15 unique bets, covering every possible combination that comes from backing four selections. The 15 bets are broken down like this:
– 1 fourfold accumulator
– 4 trebles, with each treble omitting one of your selections
– 6 doubles, again covering every possible combination
– 4 singles
The attraction of a Lucky 15 is that it offers many more ways to win than a standard accumulator. A Lucky 15 uses both your acca and your singles as well as producing trebles and doubles that reward you for correctly calling 2/4 or 3/4 of your selections. To cover the 15 separate bets, a Lucky 15 uses your stake 15 times. If you were to place £1 on a Lucky 15, you would be staking £15 in total across the various bets.
