Both of Wednesday's selections ran with credit but unfortunately, neither of them managed to win. Both races were won by outsiders, with prices of 28/1 and 18/1. If you had given me a week to study the two races, I still would not have called those results.
Thursday's racing isn't the worst and I've gone ahead and selected two horses that I fancy to go well.
Clove Hitch 11/8 – Newbury 4:00
Clove Hitch isn't the most exciting of prices at 11/8 but I still think the current price represents some value as I expected my selection to be more around even money.
My selection finished third behind Economics in only her second outing, going down by just under three lengths after 289 days of the track. Economics has since gone on to land the Group 2 Dante Stakes at York when bolting up by six lengths and that's surely the strongest piece of form on offer by some margin by any horse who has a run under the belt.
Clove Hitch showed further improvement when going one better to finish second at Windsor behind the Gosden-trained Cat Ninja. Clove Hitch was only beaten by half a length that day as the pair broke roughly eleven lengths clear of the remainder. Cat Ninja was unable to follow up next time out to boost the form, however, did finish second behind a decent sort from the Roger Varian yard in Dosman who only finished six lengths behind Ambiente Friendly on debut who went on to finish second in The Derby behind City Of Troy.
Vice President 5/2 – Leopardstown 7:30
This looks a decent maiden on paper with several coming into this with strong claims but I feel Aiden O'Briens Vice President is the more solid play and if able to improve from his debut run, should take all the beating.
My selection finished third on his debut on this track last month behind stablemate Highbury. Vice President ran very green on debut and did finish a fair way off Highbury in the end ( seven and a half lengths ), Highbury holds some valuable entries in the Irish St Ledger and Irish Derby, which would tell you straight away that Vice Presidents debut run was a decent enough contest in the end.
This season in particular, Aiden O'Briens' horses have tended to need the run and I'll be surprised if Vice President doesn't come on massively from debut.
