The first day of the Cheltenham Festival didn't disappoint. There were some thrilling races and the bookies probably escaped as winners on the day.

Thommo had the most profitable among our Tipster Team with two winners; The Conditional and Imperial Aura who were tipped at 7-1 and 5-1 respectively.

No winners on Day 1 but it was all about damage limitation and quite a few placed so not too bad overall. Disappointed with Benie but cant take anything away from Blackmore who was simply brilliant.
Day 2 I have some of my stronger fancies of the week running so if this goes pear shaped it will be an uphill battle to break even.
Once again some of my prices are shorter now.

    1.30 Envoi Allen 5/4

I wont go on too much about this horse, his record speaks for itself and it will be a major shock if he’s beaten.

    2.10 Minella Indo 4/1

Henry De Bromhead had a good first day thankfully as I’ve had this horse shortlisted for a while.
He won the Albert Bartlett last year and 5 of the last 10 winners have ran in that race the previous year. 7yr olds have also won 11 of the last 13 running.
It should be a cracking race with the likes of Champ, Copperhead and Allaho in the field but I just think MI will be too strong for them.

    2.50 Carnardier 12/1 ew

5th in this race last year and just 4lbs higher this year. He also has his first run for Willie Mullins and hopefully that will bring about some improvement. Hes also a C&D winner.
9 of the last 18 winners were French bred and 8 of the last 11 in the 140’s.

    3.30
I seen a special on pp site offering 5/2 for Dynamite Dollars w/o Defi, Chacun and Altior and jumped straight onto it.
What will win the race, god knows but if you were to put a gun to my head, I’d go for Defi. Shame Altior isn’t running although I dont think he would have won.

    4.10 Tiger Roll evs
    gets around safely he wins.

    4.50 Aramax 7/1 Theatre of War 25/1

An awful race for punters with 6 of the last 8 winners returning between 25/1 and 40/1 but I think Aramax is a graded horse running in a h’cap and has a great chance of ending the rot for fav backers.
Theatre of War for Gavin Cromwell also has a chance off 130. He was running really well before coming to grief in a race won by A Wave of the Sea whose now rated 142.

    5.30 Appreciate it 15/8 NAP

My NAP of the meeting. Absolutely bolted up at Leopardstown lto and I just cant see anything getting past him.

Wherever the Fav in the bumper finishes I don’t think Eskylane will be far away ,has already finished in front of Appreciate It ,looked impressive when allowed to go on in his last race and I took the 20/1 available at the time .My worry is that Jamie Codd has had the pick of Big Gordon’s horses but 12/1 looks a fair e/w price for 4 places GL

classy tip from DC with aramax regarding his write up, plug had him too, well in

  30. 4 years ago

doing well so far so going for a complete PUNT in the last, FIVE BAR BRIAN 50/1 unibet (40/1 everywhere else)

i think PIPE’s recent form means he has to be considered in the last, he has two runners 8/1 and 11/1, champion elect brian hughes on one whilst his main man tom scudamore on the other.

a worry is he just a 2nd at 16s and that mayve been his best chance but i’ll be backing both at throway stakes too.

3rd at the home bend, but no where, got the trainer right at least haha

  31. double carpet 4 years ago

Glad Aramax won but the following just shows how cruel this game can be.

Did a fiver free bet on JP runners. It was just a hunch.

    Champ
    Dame De Compagnie
    DEFI
    Easysland
    Aramax

It paid 6,700 roughly and DEFI DU SEUIL let’s me down. !!!!!!!!

  32. duncanpoundcake 4 years ago

DEFI has done me for the p/p got 5/6 placed hey ho…. onwards

i saw that dunca\n, unlucky, £352 to the £1, gross, also DC, dreadfully sickening, especially when the hot pot lets you down. UL.

    • double carpet 4 years ago

Kick in the jewels but that’s racing.
      As Duncan says….onwards

  33. theplug 4 years ago

    DC
Defi let a lot of people down still cant believe it .
but happy with out sam 3rd at 50/1 ew,and aramax 9/1 now for codd in the last

  34. elvis parsley 4 years ago

5 of my 7 ew placed.
Not a bad day, also a winner on the footy thread earlier.
Had a few quid on darling daughter 12-1 ( 7 places) in the last for interest.

Well done winners today, some crackers, unlucky those who were let down by defi.
Its hard to take if it loses by a couple of lengths but the manner of its defeat was inexplicably poor 😬
