Thankfully, my decision to back three short-priced favourites paid off.
I am not a huge fan of backing multiple shorties, as even if you get a winner, you're either not much in profit or you're still down.
All three managed to get the win, and in a couple of them, it didn't look likely.
Carlisle had to remove a couple of the fences in the home straight due to the low sun. That was a huge inconsideration to Juby Ball, who jumped amazingly on his chasing debut. Luckily, his second wind kicked in, and James Bowen powered him to success.
The Snowden horse in the bumper must've traded much higher than the 5/6 price he was sent off. He was off the bridle and looked like a baby. In the end, Gavin Sheehan showed who was the stronger man between him and Brian Hughes, which I'm not shocked about.
The Burren Man won easily for Brendan Powell, proving it to be the right decision to make the long trip up to Carlisle for the one ride.
King Of Highways 7/4 (1pt) – Plumpton 12.35
After a couple of decent Mondays in the last month, we're back to the usual rubbish to start off the week.
King Of Highways instantly caught my attention in the opener at Plumpton for the in-form Chris Gordon stable.
Gordon's runner made a nice impression on chasing debut last time out, finishing third in the same graded race as today's race, but the opposition looked better lto.
With that recent run being his first start in 298 days, he is more than expected to have come on plenty for that run. It's a quick return, so that gives me more confidence that he wasn't 100% at Lingfield last time out.
This is a conditional jockeys' race, and getting Freddie Gordon in these races is a bit of a cheat code. He is a brilliant conditional and should turn professional at some point, as he is more than capable.
Back it with Tote (no fixed odds)King Gris 11/4 (1pt) – Ayr 2.45
I'm not extremely confident in this selection, but at the bottom of the weights for Gordon Elliott is King Gris. Based on what we know, he has a lot to prove, but why would Gordon Elliott take on a horse this lowly rated unless he saw potential?
I think Red Cadillac is the one to beat. He won by a head in a better class race last time out, and that was his first run of the season. He has only gone up 4lbs, so given that he is in form, there should be more to come.
However, Gordon Elliott's runners always have to be worth a second glance when they come to Scotland. His strike rate, especially with Sean Bowen in the saddle, is very strong.
This horse is only 73 rated on his stable debut, which makes me think that he could be well ahead of the handicapper. He obtained him from Patrick Morris, who is a flat trainer, so there must have been plenty to improve on since moving to Ireland.
