For the third day in a row, the best each-way selection was a placed effort.
It's unfortunate that we haven't managed to land a win in this column, but walking away with horses in the places is fine by me. Heart Wood eventually finished second in the Ryanair chase but was never for catching the winner, who was the impressive Fact To File, who could farm this race for years to come if connections really wanted to.
JCB Triumph Hurdle
Rizzel's tips
The Triumph Hurdle isn't a race I've done great in over the years. I think the last winners I backed for this race were Defi Du Seuil in 2017 and Ivanovich Gorbatov in 2016. In hindsight, there have been some obvious winners of this race, with the likes of Vauban and Lossiemouth, but that's the game, and we sometimes try and take on the shorter-priced horses in search of value, and it doesn't always work out.
This year is no different for me, and I have decided to avoid those at the head of the market, instead, I've gone for Mondo Man, who is trained by the Gary & Josh Moore combination and Brian Hughes gets the ride. This race can often go to a horse who is very good on the flat, and Mondo Man is the best flat horse in this race, so if he can iron out all of his weaknesses, he surely has a chance of hitting the frame at the very least.
The main problem for this horse is that he is keen and has pulled hard in his two races prior to today. However, they haven't got a good gallop in any of those two races and field sizes weren't big, so I think the number of runners in this race will guarantee a good pace, but it should also help Mondo Man settle.
The booking of Brian Hughes caught my eye. Brian isn't my cup of tea, but he knows how to settle a horse, and I think he is the perfect man for the job. I wouldn't say this is a spare ride as C Quinn is at Cheltenham tomorrow, but I think it's more of the owners/trainers asking for Brian to ride as he is the most suitable man for the job.
I'm not stupid, and I understand my selection was behind Lulamba when they previously met. That horse is owned by the Donnellys and trained by Nicky Henderson. But horse racing is a crazy sport and a game of inches, so knowing my horse is 111 rated on the flat and gets the first-time hood, it could all come together on the big day, and I think he has a fighting chance of showing what he's really worth if it all clicks.
The trainers could have easily pitched this horse into the juvenile handicap on day one, but connections opted against it as they clearly think he has the ability. Gary Moore knows the level of horse required to win this race as he has Goshen which was the nearly winner of this race if it wasn't for a freak accident at the last hurdle.
Selection: Mondo Man 14/1 Each Way (4 places)
