The PGA Tour FedEx Cup playoffs will continue this week with the top 50 players in the standings set to tee it up at the BMW Championship in Castle Rock, Colorado.
The event is the penultimate event of the playoffs before the grand finale at the Tour Championship next week. From the 50 players who are playing this week, only the top 30 will remain to fight it out to become the FedEx Cup winner.
Like last week at the St Jude Championship, quadruple points are on offer to everyone competing this week which means we can expect significant changes in the standings. Those currently ranked between 31-50 have work to do to qualify for next week but the task is far from impossible thanks to this points increase.
Also like last week, there will be no cut line at the halfway stage so all 50 players come into this week knowing that they will be playing all 72 holes at Castle Pines Golf Club. Ahead of the action starting tomorrow, here are our BMW Championship betting tips.
BMW Championship betting tips
It is the first time since 2006 that a PGA Tour event has been held at Castle Pines Golf Club so there isn't an awful lot to go off in terms of previous form around this course. Modifications over the past 20 years mean that is will be the longest course in PGA Tour history at 8,130 yards.
While instinctively that would make you believe the big hitters on tour should be in for a good week, the figures are deceiving due to the altitude and thin air at Castle Pines. The PGA Tour states that the course will play the same as a 7,350-yard course at sea level.
Picking players to back this week was difficult due to the lack of data around the course but putting average is one stat that winners of ‘The International' (the tournament that used to be held here each year) always ranked highly on.
Perhaps more important this week will be form and momentum.
Scottie Scheffler E/W (Eight places) – 3/1
Backing Scottie Scheffler to win a golf tournament in 2024 almost feels like cheating but this is certainly a course that he can attack with his approach wizardry. Despite what many people think, Scheffler is also an elite putter statistically and leads the PGA Tour this season for putting average – stat that used to be crucial around here.
Scheffler's form is obviously fantastic, too and generally speaking, if he plays his best then he will win. This tournament is slightly more important than most for Scheffler, too, as a poor showing here could result in him slipping behind Xander Schaufelle in the FedEx Cup Standings for the Tour Championship.
Whoever leads the FedEx Cup standings before a ball is hit next week will start on -10, two shots ahead of the player in the second place.
Hideki Matsuyama E/W (Eight places) – 14/1
Hideki Matsuyama had been threatening a win for some time before he won his second event of the season last week at the St Jude Championship. Matsuyama was dominant last week and led the tournament for the majority of the week before finishing with a steady round of even par to secure the win.
Prior to that, he'd finished inside the top ten at Memorial and the US Open and picked up a Bronze medal for his country at the Olympics. Momentum has been key in the playoffs over the years, just ask Viktor Hovland who won back-to-back events last year to win the Tour Championship.
Sam Burns E/W (Eight places) – 25/1
Sam Burns is yet to win on the PGA Tour this season but he is currently playing his best golf of the year so one could be right around the corner. Burns has finished inside the top 15 in five of his last seven events and competed well last week at the St Jude Championship, finishing in a tie for 5th.
This is a course that should suit Burns given that he is widely regarded as one of the best putters on the tour. He ranks second in putting average on the PGA Tour this season and that level of form on the dancefloor is going to pay dividend eventually.
