Football Bet of the Day: Search St Mary’s For Goals & Cards on Tuesday

After making it three winners in as many days in Denmark on Sunday, The Football Bet of the Day returns this evening and sees me head to the English Championship, and there is one fixture in particular that has caught my eye for goals and cards.

Southampton will aim to keep their slim hopes of automatic promotion alive as they welcome playoff-chasing Coventry to St Mary’s this evening in a fixture that appeals to me for both goals and cards.

Russell Martin’s hosts are the joint-third-highest scorers in the Championship, scoring 76 goals across their opening 39 matches, with 46 (61%) of them coming in front of their supporters. The Saints have only failed to score at home against 2nd-placed Ipswich in the middle of September – scoring on multiple occasions in 12/19 (63%) of their home tussles – and will be confident of getting on the scoresheet once again on home turf against a Coventry defence that has registered just three clean sheets away from home this campaign.

Mark Robins’ visitors have scored 65 goals across their opening 40 Championship fixtures this season, with 33 (51%) of them coming on their travels. The Sky Blues have found the back of the net in 18/20 (90%) of their away matches in the Championship this term – scoring on multiple occasions in six of their previous nine – and will look to get on the scoresheet once again away from home against a Saints defence that’s kept just five clean sheets at home this season, shipping multiple goals in four of their last five.

Southampton’s opening 19 Championship fixtures in front of their supporters this campaign are averaging an eye-catching 3.74 goals per game, with Both Teams to Score banking in 13/19 (68%) of them, including in 6/7 (86%) of them when hosting top-10 opposition – and given the same has landed in 15/20 (75%) of the Sky Blues’ away matches in the Championship this season – I’m happy to have a punt on both of these sides finding the target.

To nudge up the price on both selections, I’m happy to add in for there to be a minimum of three cards in the match, with both sides picking up one. This selection has proven profitable in all 20 (100%) of Coventry’s away matches in the Championship this term, with it also landing in 16/19 (84%) of Southampton’s Championship outings in front of their supporters.
