Football Bet of the Day

After making it five successive winners in Graz on Sunday, The Football Bet of the Day returns on Thursday and sees me delve into the Nations League, and I’ve highlighted a goals-based selection in one of the fixtures.

⚽️ Italy vs Germany

🇪🇺 Nations League

⏰ Thursday 20 March, 19:45

Italy welcome Germany to the San Siro on Thursday night in the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final tie in a fixture that appeals to me for goals at both ends.

Luciano Spalletti’s hosts have fired in 19 goals across their previous seven competitive clashes in front of their supporters.

The Azzuri have found the back of the net in each of those seven matches – notching on multiple occasions in five of their past six – and will look to breach a Germany defence that has failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their 11 Nations League fixtures away from home, shipping 2+ goals in five (45%) of them.

Julian Nagelsmann’s visitors scored 18 goals across their six Nations League fixtures this campaign, with five (28%) of them coming on their travels.

Die Mannschaft have found the back of the net in all bar one of their previous 10 Nations League contests on their travels – striking on multiple occasions in three of their last four – and will look to trouble an Azzuri defence that has recorded a solitary shutout across their past seven competitive clashes on home soil, with that coming against minnows Malta.

Bet of the Day

Italy’s previous seven competitive clashes on home soil have averaged a whopping 4.29 goals per game, with Both Teams to Score banking in six (86%) of them – only failing to land in a 4-0 thrashing of minnows Malta.

Germany’s opening 11 Nations League fixtures on their travels have averaged an eye-catching 3.27 goals per game, with Both Teams to Score landing in nine of their previous 10.

What’s more, seven of the last eight meetings between the sides since Italy’s 2-0 success in the semi-final of the 2006 World Cup have produced goals at both ends – including both recent Nations League fixtures in 2022 – and backing both teams to score in Milan on Thursday night appeals to me.
