The midweek EFL programme presents three opportunities where recent results and underlying performances point towards strong betting selections across the Championship and League One.

After a difficult start to the season, our EFL betting column has shown signs of improvement, with just three losing wagers from our previous nine selections. The focus remains on identifying the most likely winners rather than chasing bigger prices.

This week's selections feature a Championship side unbeaten in eight matches, one of League One's most productive home attacks and a fixture where both teams' recent scoring patterns suggest goals.

Wrexham v Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough head to Wrexham with one of the Championship's strongest recent records, and their underlying performances suggest their unbeaten sequence has been built on considerably more than clinical finishing.

The visitors have won five and drawn three of their last eight league matches, scoring 22 goals and conceding 12. Their attacking output has been particularly impressive, averaging 2.18 xG per game while allowing opponents just 1.00 xGA.

Those numbers have improved further across their latest four fixtures. Middlesbrough have collected ten points from a possible 12, scoring 13 goals and averaging 2.54 xG against 0.77 xGA.Their ability to create opportunities is another important factor. Middlesbrough have averaged 9.8 shots on target across those four matches, compared with Wrexham's 3.2. Their attacking threat has also translated into results away from home.

The visitors are unbeaten across their last five league trips, winning three and drawing two. They have scored 12 goals during that sequence, averaging 2.14 xG and conceding 1.03 xGA.

Wrexham approach this contest in considerably less convincing form. They have won only two of their last eight league matches, losing four and conceding 15 goals. Their attacking performances are particularly concerning. Wrexham have averaged 1.14 xG across eight matches, falling to 1.18 during their latest four. They have also failed to score in their two most recent league fixtures.

Home advantage offers Wrexham some encouragement. They have scored nine goals across their last five home matches and have demonstrated greater attacking consistency at their own ground.

Nevertheless, Middlesbrough's superior chance creation, defensive figures and sustained unbeaten form provide a convincing argument for backing the visitors to collect another three points.

Huddersfield Town v Luton Town

Few League One teams are producing attacking performances as consistently as Huddersfield Town, although their meeting with Luton Town presents a significant test against opponents arriving in equally impressive form.

Huddersfield have won each of their last four league matches, scoring 11 goals and conceding only twice. Their attacking numbers during that sequence have been exceptional, averaging 2.65 xG and 1.65 open-play xG per match.

The longer-term picture supports those performances. Across eight league fixtures, Huddersfield have scored 17 goals, collecting five victories and two draws while losing only once.

Their average xG of 2.53 across those matches demonstrates the consistency of their attacking threat. They have also averaged more than five big chances per game, indicating a regular ability to create high-quality opportunities.

Home performances strengthen the case for another productive display. Huddersfield have scored 12 goals across their last five league fixtures at the John Smith's Stadium, finding the net at least twice in four. Their average home xG during that period stands at 2.64, accompanied by 6.6 shots on target and 5.6 big chances per match.

Luton will provide stern opposition. They have won four consecutive league matches, scoring nine goals and averaging 2.28 xG during that run. Their defensive performances have also improved, with an average xGA of 1.09. There is greater encouragement for Huddersfield when examining Luton's away results. The visitors have conceded ten goals across their last five league trips, allowing opponents an average of 1.61 xGA.

Huddersfield's sustained attacking production is the decisive factor. Their goals are supported by strong xG, shot accuracy and big-chance figures across several different samples. With the hosts having scored at least twice in six of their last eight matches, another two-goal return is a realistic target.

Birmingham City v Millwall

Birmingham City's home scoring record provides the foundation for our third midweek selection, with Millwall's away defensive performances adding further encouragement for a match featuring at least three goals.

Birmingham have won five of their last eight Championship fixtures, scoring 16 goals and conceding seven. Their attacking performances have been consistent, producing an average of 1.93 xG per match.

The hosts have also enjoyed a productive recent run, winning three of their latest four fixtures and scoring ten goals. Their average xG of 1.86 across those matches suggests they have continued to create regular scoring opportunities.

Home form is particularly relevant to this selection. Birmingham have scored 12 goals across their last five league matches at St Andrew's, with four of those fixtures producing at least three goals.

They have scored twice or more in four of those five home games, averaging 1.69 xG and 1.36 open-play xG.

Millwall's away defensive record offers another reason to anticipate goals. The visitors have conceded 12 times across their last five league trips, allowing opponents an average of 1.64 xGA. Four of those five away fixtures have finished over 2.5 goals, while four have seen both teams score.

Millwall's attacking figures also deserve attention. They have averaged 1.95 xG across their latest four league matches, creating four big chances per fixture. Their recent 4-1 victory over Derby demonstrated their ability to contribute to a high-scoring contest, although their away attacking output remains less convincing.

Across the two relevant five-match venue samples, eight of ten fixtures have produced at least three goals. Birmingham's consistent home scoring and Millwall's defensive difficulties on the road make over 2.5 goals the preferred selection.
