FERNANDO ALONSO could be set for a dramatic move to Mercedes next year in the wake of F1 world champ Nico Rosberg's shock retirement.

Alonso is 3-1 to at Ladbrokes to team up with Lewis Hamilton, 10 years after their spectacular fall-out as team-mates at McLaren.

Pascal Wehrlein leads the betting at 2-1, Williams' Valtteri Bottas is a 4-1 shot, Rosberg is 10-1 to change his mind and keep his seat in 2017 and 33-1 says Jenson Button makes a swift U-turn on his retirement to rejoin Hamilton.

Richard Marsh of Ladbrokes News said: “Rosberg's announcement has stunned everyone but Formula One doesn't hang around and Pascal Wehrlein is already the favourite for the coveted Mercedes seat.”

“However, it's the potential for a Fernando Alonso reunion with old rival Lewis Hamilton which has really set tongues wagging.”
