Everton vs Newcastle United

, KO: 19:45 Apr 27, 2023, Goodison Park
Newcastle United

Everton are in desperate need of an upturn in results as they host in-form Newcastle United in a Premier League fixture on Thursday.

The hosts head into Thursday’s clash off the back of a drab 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace in their previous Premier League fixture. They looked disjointed at times and struggled to create chances with the returning Dominic Calvert-Lewin often isolated in attack.

The result means Everton are now winless in their last five Premier League matches, suffering two defeats in that run. Sean Dyche’s men have now slipped into the bottom three, although they are level on points with Leicester City.

Everton have also struggled at Goodison Park lately with just one win in their last four home matches. They have been beaten twice in that run, including a 3-1 defeat to Fulham in their previous fixture in front of their fans.

Newcastle United breathed new life into their top four push following an impressive 6-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last time out in the Premier League. Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy netted a brace each while Joelinton and Callum Wilson were also on target.

It was a good way to bounce back from the disappointing 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa in their previous fixture. Eddie Howe’s men have now won six of their last seven matches and are up to third on the standings, six points above Tottenham Hotspur, who are just outside the top four places.

With the exception of that defeat at Villa Park, Newcastle United have shown some good form on their recent travels. The Magpies had won their previous three away matches, with an impressive 5-1 victory at West Ham among their results in that run.

How the bookies view it

Newcastle United are considered overwhelming favourites among the bookies with a win priced at 4/5 by 10bet. Everton are considered outsiders at home at 4/1 with bet365 while a draw is set at odds of 13/5 by Paddy Power.

Head to head

Everton have a 67-65 edge with 34 draws from 166 previous matches against Newcastle United. However, the Magpies have won four of the last five meetings and claimed a 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture back in October.

Players to watch

Everton have struggled for goals lately and will be looking to Dominic Calvert-Lewin to provide some attacking spark. The striker returned from injury last time out and could be worth keeping an eye on to score anytime at 4/1 by William Hill.

Following his brace last time out, Alexander Isak has now scored 10 goals in his debut season in the Premier League. The striker has also found the net four times in his last four matches and is priced at 8/5 by bet365 to continue that scoring run.

Anything else catch the eye?

Newcastle United have been involved in some high-scoring encounters lately and Thursday’s clash could be tipped to produce over 3.5 goals at 14/5 with BetVictor. Over 2.5 goals can also be considered at 21/20 with Coral while Unibet is offering odds of 19/20 on both teams to score.

The Magpies scored in both halves last time out against Tottenham Hotspur and could be set for a repeat at 2/1 with Coral.
