4.50 Weatherbys Champion Bumper
Wednesday 17 March | Age: 4-6yo | Prize: £750,000
The Champion Bumper is a Grade 1 National Hunt Flat race which is run over a distance of about two miles and half a furlong (2 miles and 87 yards). Open to horses aged between four and six years old, the Champion Bumper was established in 1992 and is run on the Old Course at Cheltenham. It was initially called the Festival Bumper, and had various sponsors in the early years, including Tote and Guinness. However, Weatherbys have been sponsoring the race since 1997 and it is now widely known as the Weatherbys Champion Bumper.
Voice of Value's Tips
The front two in the market, (Kilcruit and Sir Gerhard) have been the buzz horses for the last few weeks and both deserve their place near the top of the pile on the form so far.
However, I think you can pick holes in that form and I'm never keen to back a short priced horse in the bumper.
Horses can improve so much between races at that stage of their career and I'm looking for something at a bigger price if I'm going to have a punt.
With that in mind I like THREE STRIPE LIFE as a live contender.
He has only had the one run but he looked excellent and is likely to improve for his second run.
Connections seem keen on him and with firms now offering 4 places each way he looks the way to go for me in what is always a tricky race to work out.

Alan Thomson's Tips
What price a Willie Mullins tricast? The bumper maestro saddles five runners this time round and KILCRUIT roared to the head of the market after his scintillating performance at Leopardstown. Patrick Mullins rode a very confident race that day but with amateur riders barred, Paul Townend steps into the hot seat.
The trainer has inherited unbeaten Sir Gerhard from Gordon Elliott, with owners Cheveley Park Stud seeking their third straight success following Ferny Hollow and Envoi Allen. Mullins is convinced that Ramillies remains open to plenty of improvement, while Cool Jet and winning mare Grangee complete a formidable quintet.
Three Stripe Life landed the odds for Elliott on debut at Navan and is another interesting Irish challenger.
Legitimate home hopes look thin on the ground but Dan Skelton’s Elle Est Elle made a winning debut at Aintree in October before sharing the spoils here the following month.
