ALFAATIK (1.40) reappeared at York three weeks ago, giving 5lb and a beating to Dark Jedi, and makes plenty of appeal in the Mallard Handicap run over the St Leger distance on Town Moor.
That piece of form received a boost last Saturday when Dark Jedi finished runner-up in the Old Borough Cup at Haydock off a 3lb higher mark. Alfaatik’s principal rival could be last year’s winner Sleeping Lion, third to Island Brave at Ascot in early August. Volcanic Sky’s fifth to Summer Moon at York may be slightly stronger form than Calculation’s second to Seinsational at Sandown.
SACRED (2.40) is the pick in a hot renewal of the Flying Childers Stakes. She chased home Wesley Ward’s Campanelle at Royal Ascot and was again runner-up, this time to Irish raider Miss Amulet, in the Lowther Stakes at York. She has little in hand of the Ger Lyons-trained Frenetic on a line through Miss Amulet, and both receive the fillies’ allowance here.
The Lir Jet, winner of the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, has twice finished runner-up since, at Chantilly and the Curragh, and Michael Bell’s colt will have his supporters.
REVOLVER (3.15) has been placed brilliantly by Sir Mark Prescott to reel off six straight victories and has prospects of making it a Magnificent 7 in the Doncaster Cup.
The gelding receives a three-year-old allowance from some useful, but exposed, older rivals and is worth chancing. Revolver’s evolution has been remarkable, starting his victory parade off a lowly 57 rating, and the handicapper has awarded him a mark of 98 going into this 2m 2f Group 2 contest.
Favourite Spanish Mission made his first outing for new trainer Andrew Balding a winning one at Chester and he holds Selino on that form line. Eagles By Day had Spanish Mission adrift in sixth when running fourth to Stradivarius in the two-mile Goodwood Cup, while Red Verdon has a solid course record and should go well, despite his 3lb penalty.
ONE RULER (3.45) can sprout wings in the Flying Scotsman Stakes. The Godolphin colt was unlucky on debut in a Sandown maiden in July, being badly hampered at the start before making up a deal of ground behind useful Etonion. One Ruler made no mistake the following month on a return visit to the Esher track, making all for a decisive victory over favourite Maximal.
Apollo One stormed clear on debut at Newmarket and tried to make all when fading late into third behind Etonian in the Group 3 Solario Stakes at Sandown. That may prove stronger form than Spycatcher’s second to Gear Up in the Acomb Stakes at York.
