SEAN CALVERT started in style with two winners from the men's draw yesterday and today it's fellow Unibet tennis tipster Jacob Hansen focusing on the women's singles.
Jacob is a WTA betting expert and has three selections from the Flushing Meadows showpiece.
Naomi Osaka v Laura Siegemund
Back in April, Osaka beat Siegemund in a meeting on the clay of Charleston, which must be a worry for Siegemund, and the reason for taking a chance on Osaka winning in straight sets again this afternoon.
The clay is arguably the surface Siegemund prefers the most, while she more or less avoids the outdoor hard courts. On 20 August this year she lost in 2 sets to Jo Konta on outdoor hard court. That was her first match on this surface since March 2017.
Not because of injuries, she simply prefers the clay and she has lost 10 of her last 11 matches of outdoor hard courts, the exception coming against clay courter Soler-Espinosa, who at the time was ranked 122 in the world.
Osaka has had some disappointing results lately, but she loves the big occasions and has reached at least the third round of the last five Slams. She should be able to at least make the second round this year.
Taylor Townsend v Amanda Anisimova
There seems to be a huge expectancy from the odds-compilers that Anisimova will win this one without too much hassle, but she is, after all, only 16 years of age, and has yet to win a match in the main event of a Grand Slam.
Townsend reached the second round of both French Open and Wimbledon this year. The last two years she has lost in the opening round of the US, but both times after matches that went to three sets. Her only previous encounter with Anisimova also went to a deciding set.
Kiki Bertens v Karolina Pliskova
Is Pliskova worth a shot tonight? She recently won Cincinnati, so she is obviously in good shape, but Halep reached the final in said tournament while winning Montreal and what did that help her yesterday in the US Open?
Perhaps Bertens will take care not to fall in to the same trap, but she has only twice won a match in the main event at US Open and both times they came in three sets.
She is playing the weaker of the Pliskova-sisters, but this is her best surface, and I am speculating she can at least take the match the distance, just like in her only previous encounter with Bertens.
