BARCELONA AND BATE kick off a big night of Champions League action with early games at 5pm.

The ties in Russia and Belarus kick off at 5pm and I’m looking to double up and increase my stakes for the later games.

Barca stars say they are still hurting at their Champions League defeat by Celtic and that could be bad news for a Spartak Moscow side facing an early exit and with injury problems.

Lionel Messi looked backed to his best with a weekend double and is 12-5 at bet365 to score first with the La Liga leaders just 1-3 (various) to win.

Barca have only kept two clean sheets in their last nine – against Alaves in the cup and lowly Rayo – so there is a possibility of both teams scoring. It was 3-2 at the Nou camp and this pays 10-11 at Coral.

BATE Borisov look a half decent bet at home to a Lille outfit hammered 6-1 by Bayern Munich last time out and with no chance of qualifying from Group F. The French side were beaten 3-1 at home to the Belarussians and face another struggle. You can have 11-10 on BATE at William Hill.

Valencia v Bayern Munich is the other Group F clash and there should be a few goals here. Take both to score at 8-13 with bet365 and over 3.5 goals at 2-1 with William Hill. Even if BATE win a draw would leave qualification in both of the big guns’ hands going into the final round of games.

Celtic could qualify for the last 16 tonight but a trip to Benfica in many ways is even tougher than facing Barcelona.

The Portuguese are much stronger in Lisbon than on their travels and Celtic will need to be at their best to even pick up a point. Neil Lennon’s men were backed bravely by punters at up to 10-1 and are a biggest 6-1 with William Hill and others to pick up the points.

A draw would be a decent outcome and pays 10-3 (various) while Benfica are 1-2 (various).

I’m reluctant to go against Celtic after two heroic displays against Barca and victory away to Spartak Moscow but I can see the home men, who have won eight of their last nine, edging this.

They brushed aside Spartak Moscow 2-0 but even if they beat Celtic the Scots should seal their passage in the final group match at home to the Russians.

The key for Celtic could be not conceding in the first 20 minutes or so, keeping it tight as they did against Barca and frustrating their opponents.

Oscar Cardozo hit a double against Spartak and is 4-1 at Betfred and Coral to hit the opener and 11-10 with Betfred to net.

Georgios Samaras has been a star turn for Celtic on their travels and is 12-1 (bet365) and 4-1 (Blue Square).

Victor Wanyama, the hero against Barca, will have backers at 7-1 with bet365 to net during the game while Charlie Mulgrew is 11-1 to hit the target at any point.

Chelsea face a tough task away to Juventus in Group E. A last-gasp winner against Shakhtar kept the Blues’ hopes alive but they struggled at West Brom at the weekend and could miss out in Turin.

Juve’s form has dipped since they lost their 39-game unbeaten La Liga record and they were held 0-0 at home to Lazio on Saturday. It’s a tough call and could be a draw. It was 2-2 in London and I can see boh scoring again (8-11, bet365, Betfred).

Shakhtar look a good bet at Nordsjaelland in the other Group E tie after playing well at Stamford Bridge. They are no bigger than 4-11 (various) and it’s a bit short against a side who held Juventus at home but the Ukrainians should be OK.

Best bet of the night could be Braga who head to Cluj trying to avenge a 2-0 home defeat. Cluj have won just four points from 24 on their home soil in Champions League history and Paulo Sergio’s have been struggling with injuries – the latest doubt being centre-half and skipper Cuda.

Braga were unlucky to lose twice to Man Utd after leading and have the class to win in Romania. They are 6-4 (various).

Having already qualified Man Utd head to Galatasaray with their reserve side. Most of their star turns, including Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, have been left at home and the likes of Scott Wootton, Larnell Cole, Tom Thorpe and Davide Petrucci are in the squad.

Javier Hernandez, Danny Welbeck and Ashley Young could provide a threat up front but Sir Alex Ferguson won’t be taking any risks and Galatasaray, who lost just 1-0 at Old Trafford, must be considered at 23-20 with William Hill.

BATE/Barcelona/Shakhtar treble
(Pays £36.20 to a £10 stake at Paddy Power, Stan James)

(6-4, various)

Cardozo to score first
(12-5, bet365)

(23-20, William Hill)

Are you tipping any english ties?

  2. Mike 5 years ago

Thinking of a BATE/Barca double and hopefully that will give me something to play with for the later games! What stakes would you recommend fixit? I have £100 in my William hill account!

Mike, I can never recommend stakes to people because everyone’s circumstances are different. Also I don’t recommend big stakes on doubles. I’m pretty convinced about Barca and possibly even Barca -1. BATE can win but partly depends on which Lille side turns up. The French have been poor so far but with pressure off could suddenly turn it on. If I were you I’d focus on Barca even if the winnings aren’t as big.

Wanyama to score and Benfica to win if I can find anywhere that will take that bet

Chris, you’ll get it everywhere but it’s slightly strange bet that I wouldn’t double. Chances of Benfica winning increase greatly if Wanyama scores.

  4. Mr Chris Guy 5 years ago

Paul are you tipping Messi first goal at 12/5? Cordoza is 4/1

    • Profile photo of Mr Fixit Author
      Mr Fixit 5 years ago

Chris, have mentioned both in my piece. I’ll be on Messi in the early game and was thinking Cordozo first or anytime at 11-10.

  5. Mr Chris Guy 5 years ago

Might play it safe with Messi and back him £50 ew. If he scores first I get £260 back for my £100 stake (profit of £160) If he doesn’t score first but scores at anytime I get £90 back for my £100 (loss of £10).

Chris, you have to fancy Messi every time he plays. Spartak are struggling and a few out also I read it won’t be as cold as it could be so conditions won’t be too bad.

  6. Mr Chris Guy 5 years ago

I’d say that’s worth the risk, what you think Paul?

  7. Mike 5 years ago

I like the look of your bet chris, thinking of taking it on myself, especially as messi has got the added incentive of beating the record of most goals scored in a calendar year!

Mike, if you have £100 to stake I think Messi is a better option than Barca/BATE double.

James, you’ve said it youself, it’s a long shot, a very long shot so I hope stakes are small. Remember Man Utd are through and playing a reserve team.

Beneficia -1 or -2 tonight with Cardozo to score first. Chelsea also look a decent bet away from home draw no bet.

Mike, poor by BATE, good by Barca. So what happened to the advice I gave you to do the Messi ew bet which is up instead of the BATE/Barca double?

  15. Striker 5 years ago

There’s a lot of mist in Belarus, can hardly see the gameplay

  16. Don 5 years ago

Just back from work, anyone know if Spartak look like scoring? Just the one will do……

  17. Luke 5 years ago

Spartak looked like scoring first 25mins then I tuned into the BATE game just as Lille killed off my double

  18. Mike 5 years ago

I had 20 on messi fixit and 80 on barca/bate! Bate are playing terrible!!

Callum, not really. Picked out my bets pretty early and not doing anything except some inrunning if I have to. I did an anytime double on Messi and Cardozo and Cardozo first but no one else.

      Mr Fixit 5 years ago

Callum, needed that Alan goal. Hopefully Braga can turn it around now after that terrible start.

  23. Knottsy 5 years ago
