While many punters naturally gravitate towards backing a winner, betting on a draw can be a smart and rewarding alternative.

This is because bookmakers typically assign bigger odds to stalemates, which occur less often than victories for either team.

With that in mind, let’s examine this weekend’s fixtures and identify the games where draw outcomes present the best value.

Australia vs Egypt (Friday, 19:00)

Australia’s clash with Egypt at the World Cup on Friday night looks like one of the most evenly matched round of 32 ties.

The Socceroos progressed to the knockout rounds after finishing second in Group A behind the United States. Notably, it was a 0-0 draw with Paraguay that ultimately secured Australia's place in the next stage.

As for Egypt, they shared the spoils in two of their three group stage matches, with their most recent outing against Iran helping land a 22/1 winner last weekend.

The fact that Australia were involved in a low-scoring draw with Switzerland ahead of the tournament only adds to the appeal of siding with this selection. Egypt, meanwhile, held Spain to a draw in their own preparations, further strengthening the case for another stalemate in Dallas.

Mexico vs England (Monday, 01:00)

Mexico’s eagerly anticipated round of 16 clash with England in the early hours of Monday morning looks one that could well go the distance.

The co-hosts have turned their famous Azteca home into something of a fortress over the past six decades, underlining the size of the task facing the Three Lions. England were held to a draw by Ghana during the group stage, and looked set for another stalemate against DR Congo last time out before finding a late winner.

Mexico, meanwhile, arrive with a perfect record of four wins from four, although this represents by far their toughest test to date.

However, it is worth noting that Javier Aguirre’s side held Belgium to a 1-1 draw and Portugal to a goalless draw in friendly fixtures before the World Cup. A repeat of either of those scorelines would come as no surprise when they take on Thomas Tuchel's team.

USA vs Belgium (Tuesday, 01:00)

Belgium have been one of the World Cup’s draw specialists thus far, and another all-square affair could be in store when they face the USA on Tuesday.

Rudi Garcia’s side staged a dramatic comeback against Senegal to secure a 2-2 draw in the last 32, before edging the tie with a late winner to avoid a penalty shootout. Prior to that, the Red Devils saw two of their three group stage games end all square against Egypt and Iran.

While the USA have been mightily impressive on their run to the last 16, their chances here have taken a dent following star striker Folarin Balogun’s red card and suspension.

As such, this one could be settled by fine margins, and extra time and penalties would not be a shock in Seattle.
