We're treading carefully in tonight's EFL Trophy, honing in one match that looks intriguing.
Remember that all Premier League Academy teams play away in the group stages of this competition and that's usually to their disadvantage.
Seven of the youth teams finished bottom of their group last season. Another four failed to qualify, finishing third. Two finished in second place and three; Man Utd, Everton and Chelsea, topped their four-team group.
Two are in action tonight with the Under 21 squads from Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest travelling to Wrexham and Harrogate respectively and the Magpies were of those to finish stone last in 2022/23 edition, picking up just one point from their three games in the Northern Section's Group E, failing to score a single goal in the process against Doncaster, Barnsley or Lincoln.
That would suggest they might find things tough at ambitious Wrexham tonight. The young Magpies haven't made a great start to the Premier League 2 campaign with just one point from four games in which they've conceded 12.
Wrexham squeezed in seven games in August and provided plenty of entertainment with games finishing 4-2, 3-5 and 5-5 so we could see a few goals tonight against an inexperienced defence.
The Wrexham win is just 4/9 so add in Over 2.5 Goals to make it a 10/11 BetBuilder.

Gauff vs Ostapenko
Before the scheduling was up I thought that Ostapenko would have a great chance in this one but with them playing at 12 noon with the high heat today it certainly now favours Gauff. Ostapenko has struggled in heat in the past & I suspect the same will be the case today. With the sunny & humid conditions along with the crowd support I do feel all of this will get to Ostapenko & cause her to unload on errors including her serve. This is an area she often struggles with & so far she has hit 11, 11, 7 & 3 doubles at the US Open. 2 of those matches were at night & only one of them (Pera hit 7) was close to the time of today’s match (not as hot as today). The weather will play a big impact in this for me & I can’t imagine Ostapenko will will want to be in long rallies meaning she may well go for more on her 2nd serve. I can see another match where Ostapenko hit’s close to or more than 10 double faults.

Tiafoe vs Shelton
Expecting this one to be a very serve orientated match. Both players are holding serve over 85% of the time on hard courts over the past 12 months so break opportunities may be at a premium in this one. Shelton has a huge serve which has clocked 149mph this week. So I like the chances of 1 or more tie breaks in this along with the likelihood of 4/5 sets. Shelton is not the best returner & as I do think this will involve close sets I like the aces line for Tiafoe. He has hit 15 in both of his last 2 matches & I like that to continue again. I would lean towards a Tiafoe victory given his experience at this level but Shelton has been playing & serving so well this tournament he may just be on a rol

do you have any thoughts on number of games or sets for Gauff match MJ?
I was originally tempted by the over 21.5 games or 3 sets but I just worry about the heat and what effect this will have, in particular with Ostapenko. If this had been a night match I was looking to back Ostapenko in some way. But I would now rather back Gauff -3.5 games if I had a choice.
