Sunderland and Coventry City will reconvene for the second leg of their English Championship play-off semi-final second leg on Tuesday night.
The Black Cats drew first blood during Friday night’s first leg by claiming a 2-1 win at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
That victory has put Sunderland in the driving seat to advance to this month’s Wembley final to face either Sheffield United or Bristol City.
Given the dynamics of the tie heading into this week's second leg, I'm going to bypass the 1×2 market and instead highlight an alternative angle of attack.
Coventry have been priced up at even-money (1/1) with Sky Bet to earn a minimum of five corners on Tuesday night and that holds plenty of appeal.
Faced with a 2-1 deficit to overturn, Frank Lampard’s side will have to throw caution to the wind at some point during this week’s second leg, which in turn should see them rack up a few corners.
Moreover, the Sky Blues were among the most prolific corner takers during the regular English Championship season, earning an average of 5.93 per game.
To put that into context, only Leeds (7.11) and Sheffield Wednesday (6.04) posted a higher corners per 90 average than Coventry (5.93) during the league season that has just concluded.
What’s more, Coventry’s knack for racking up corners was plain to see during Friday night’s first leg, as Lampard’s side managed to clock up 10 flag-kicks last time out.
It's also worth noting that the Sky Blues covered the proposed 5+ corner line when they faced Sunderland back in March, hitting six corners during that particular contest.
On top of all that, the Sky Blues delivered no fewer than seven corners when they visited this venue earlier in the season.
So with all that in mind, siding with five or more Coventry corners on Tuesday night looks too big to ignore at evens with Sky Bet.
