FA Cup third round weekend usually throws up some surprises but cup shocks ain't what they used to be.
The financial gulf between the top and bottom sides has never been wider and surprises don't seem to happen as frequently as they used to even though most top sides usually opt to field fringe players in the earlier rounds of the competition.
Teams that catch the eye today are Vincent Kompany's Burnley at struggling Bournemouth and Luton at home to a Wigan side who can't buy a win.
Burnley‘s only defeat in eight was to Manchester Utd in the EFL Cup and Kompany will be keen to show that his side, who lead the Championship by five points, are more than capable of competing with Premier League sides. The Cherries would take a win but it's three Premier League points they're desperate for and that might be reflected in their line-up.
Wigan (15/4) go in to their match at Luton (3/4) off the back of four straight defeats in the Championship which sees them rooted to the bottom. They've also lost second top scorer Nathan Broadhead back to Everton and midfielder Graeme Shinnie to Aberdeen on loan so Kolo Toure doesn't have his problems to seek. Luton are having a good season in the Championship and are sniffing around the play-off places. Although there's been two many draw at Kenilworth Road they've only been beaten twice there.
It's difficult to see where many upsets will come today. In-form Middlesbrough could make life difficult for visitors Brighton. Boro are heading in the right direction under Michael Carrick. Spurs lost there in the cup last season (and Boro won at Old Trafford) and the club have dropped ticket prices in attempt to fill the Riverside. At 9/2 they wouldn't be the worst bet.
In Scotland it's the bread and butter of the SPFL this weekend.
Celtic still hold a commanding 9-point lead at the top of the Premiership after a late equaliser at Ibrox on Monday and they welcome Kilmarnock to Celtic Park this afternoon.
The Hoops have been perfect at home and often get off to a quick start. It was no different against Rangers when they sped in to a 1-0 lead after 5 minutes. A goal inside the first 10 pays 11/4 today but a better bet is for either side to score before 2o minutes at 5/6.
Early corners are also usually profitable in Celtic games. Two or more in the first 10 minutes (both teams combined) at 9/4 always has a chance at Celtic Park.
In-form Hearts travel to Paisley to face St Mirren who boast the best home record outside the top two. The Buddies have taken 21 points form a possible 30 on home soil this season but the Jambos' confidence will be sky-high after a 3-0 derby win over Hibs.
That made it 13 points won from their last four games and Robbie Neilson's side are now five clear in third place with a game in hand. They're quite clearly the best of the rest and 6/4 looks a very good price.
In the Championship both Arbroath and Inverness recorded surprising wins last weekend. Having lost 4-1 to Queen's Park the match previously Arbroath bounced back to win 4-2 at top of the table Dundee. Similarly, Inverness had been thumped 5-1 by Partick Thistle only to follow that with a 6-0 hammering of Cove Rangers. They both meet today at Gayfield and despite a barrowload of goals in their games recently a 0-0 draw can't be ruled out. Five of the last six meetings have been drawn, four of those have finished goalless and only 8 goals have been scored in the previous nine clashes. A 0-0 pays 8/1 whilst under 2.5 is 3/4.
Peterhead have won just once all season and failed to score in their last five. Visitors Airdrieonians are 8/13 to win at Balmoor Stadium where they've been victorious in four of their last five visits. Goals have been flying in in the Diamonds' last few matches; 6-2, 1-1, 4-2 and 3-5 so we can expect a few more from them today.

Liverpool v Wolves
I’m truly hoping we put out a weakened squad against Liverpool and exit the FA Cup. We need to concentrate on premier league survival.
I’ve noted something about the game though.
Andy Madley is ref. Likes a card. He reffed Arsenal v Newcastle most recently and gave out 9 cards.
On VAR is Mike Deane who just loves to be centre of attention and whilst hated by most fans…… he is particularly a knob towards the Wolves.
So this forms the basis of my betting today.
Wolves 2+ Cards – 8/11 (bet365/sky) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wolves 3+ cards – 5/2 (bet365)
Each team 2+ cards – 10/3 (bet365)
Penalty – 5/2 (bet365)
Liverpool to score a penalty – 11/4 (bet365)
Wolves player sent off – 8/1 (sky)
Happy Hunting
You hope Wolves more or less get put out then. Never have a better chance of beating Liverpool than at this time. Surely the FA Cup wont get in the way of league survival.
That’s the problem at the moment. It will. The squad is quite threadbare.
Unfortunately Lopetegui has inherited a disaster from Bruno Lage. I could talk for hours on the mess he has left us in.
Key points are:
– a lot of experienced outgoings…. Good squad players like Conor Coady, Romain saiss, marcal, ruddy.
– major fitness issues due to his training methods. This is improving massively with Lopetegui but as evidenced in the villa game in the week we were good for 55/60 minutes and then tailed off.
I’ve every faith in Lopetegui keeping us up (just about) and then hopefully come next season we will be a different animal (I’m certain of this)
Anger aside. It’s heartbreaking what Bruno Lage has done to our team.
So yeah this season it’s priority league.
However, there’s every chance his pride and competitiveness will see him field a strong side. I’d wait until the team is announced at 7 though 100%.
Me personally (and echoed by many wolves fans)….. I’d be happy to see us out of the FA cup.
We’ve got forest in the league cup quarters mid week and then a crucial 6 pointer at home to West Ham next weekend.
I don’t think you need to worry about being in the F.a cup ,Liverpool will go strong tonight and new signing Cody Gakpo will play as will Allison.
What I would say is that if he names a strong side then I’d be inclined to have a cheeky tenner on Wolves to lead at half time.
J-lo favours a high intensity high press game and we could cause Liverpool some early problems with it. Defensively they look poor and we could overload their midfield.
Wolves to lead half time is 7/1
I’d also expect us to tail off after about 60 minutes so looking at the HT/FT market
Wolves/Draw – 22/1
Wolves/liv – 20/1
Wolves/wolves – 18/1
But I’d 100% wait until the team is announced.
I’m hoping we field a weakened team as I say. But there’s a good chance that he will go strong I guess.
Cards and referee induced drama is still my favoured bet 😂😂😂😂😂
I’d guess Liverpool will go strong as the cup is all you’ll really have a chance in this season.
Yeah your probably right, can’t complain though we have won plenty over the years and are a club laden with trophies, one bad season won’t hurt.
Absolutely. You’re not going to have success every season. I do think GAKPO is a great signing though, especially at that price. Assuming you’ll make some more signings January too.
Hearts are doing better than i thought 13 points from their last 4 games that is surely unprecedented🤣🤣

Catanzaro are home 👀 top scorers in Italys top 5 divisions with 56 goals. They’ve plundered 35 goals in 10 homes,2+ in 10/10 and scored 3+ in 8/10.
The 1/2 for 2+ is good for doubles or part of a treble but I’ll go for more goals….

Yep league 1 &2 apologies for not making that clear. Cheers Chris
William Hill have Leicester to score in first half boosted to EVENS (Max £10)
Given how often these ‘dead cert specials’ seem to fail, you can put £5 to cover Leicester under 0.5 goals first half 7/4 with Paddy Power, Bet365 or others.
If Leicester do score in first half, you make a totally risk-free £5. If they don’t, you’ll get a risk free £1 from your Paddy Power cover bet.
Well, there you go AGAIN – another seemingly “dead cert” promo fails to win!
First half score 0:0. Not a Leicester goal in sight.
Always worth covering these promos 👍😉

Utter tosh ✖️
Well done winners today…
Well I’m fuming, Woeful officiating in that game. That was poor. Always going to get decisions against us with Mike Deane on VAR
But making 9 changes to the team we deserved the draw at least. We’ve got some fight and passion back too which will help in the league.
And luckily I lost my nerve and I cashed out the 3 bets for wolves to lead at half time on the 40th minute for £150 profit.
One more annoyance. A bet365 bet builder was settled as a loser for the wolves over 1.5 cards element. We got 2 yellows albeit one was our manager…….. ate bet365 right to settle that as a loser.
Offside is offside you can’t argue that really.
I’ll argue it when it isn’t offside.
No VAR angles 😂😂😂😂
It’s going viral at the moment…… neutral fans all saying the same thing. If that was at the other end Liverpool would be given the goal.
Plus point for me is that we’ve seen so many improvements under Lopetegui and tonight made 9 changes and looked good. I think the officiating tonight will just add fire to the players.
My only concern this season is staying in the Prem
So your implying the officials were corrupt, have to say the linesman’s flag did go up early.
I sure am.
Mike Deane from the Wirral on VAR In a Liverpool game. More rumours now on Twitter that his son is a season ticket holder at anfield.
The Robertson stamp on Adama completely ignored with no review…… seen reds for similar incidents.
Ultimately it doesn’t matter though. It’s done.
Onwards to the next game
