USA and Bolivia begin their 2024 Copa America campaign with a Group C clash on Sunday. The US have a solid record in this fixture and will be confident of getting the better of Bolivia, who have struggled in recent times.
USA get regularly invited to the Copa America with their best finish a semi-final berth back in 2016. They are the hosts of this year’s competition and Gregg Berhalter's men will be keen to improve on that record.
The Americans have shown some decent form lately and are unbeaten in three of their last four matches heading into the tournament. Among their results in that run is a 2-0 victory over Mexico while they also played out a 1-1 draw with Brazil in their final warm-up fixture.
Bolivia won the Copa America in 1963 but have barely come close to matching that feat ever since. They have crashed out of the group stage in the last three editions, failing to claim a single win across all the tournaments.
Their form heading into this year’s competition suggests the Bolivians are set for another poor showing. Antonio Carlos Zago’s men have lost eight of their last 10 matches and were hammered 3-0 by Colombia in their final warm-up game.
How the bookies view it: USA too strong
USA have been installed as overwhelming favourites among the bookies and are priced at 1/6 by Betfred to claim the win. An unlikely victory for Bolivia is valued at 12/1 while a draw is set at odds of 5/1.
Head to head: No chance for Bolivia
USA have won all three previous matches against Bolivia and are yet to concede a goal. The last meeting was a friendly in 2018 which ended 3-0.
Players to watch: Pulisic always the threat
Christian Pulisic is often involved in most USA’s attacking plays and will be the one to watch on Sunday. The forward has six goals in his last 10 international appearances and is priced at 23/20 by Betfred to maintain his scoring run.
As a captain of the national team and the top scorer in the team USA of all active players, Pulisic will clearly be the biggest threat to Bolivia's defence in this match.
Given Bolivia’s goalscoring problems, USA will be targeting a shutout on Sunday. Tim Ream is expected to feature at the heart of the defence and can lead the US to a clean sheet at 8/15 by Betfred.
Probable line-ups
Ricardo Pepi could get the nod to lead the line for USA ahead of Folarin Balogun while Christian Pulisic should also feature in attack. Weston McKennie should be the choice in midfield with Tim Ream starting in defence.
Striker Carmelo Algaranaz sat out Bolivia’s final warm-up fixture and is expected to return to the team. Goalkeeper Carlos Lampe is also likely to start having come off the bench in that defeat.
USA: Turner, Robinson, Ream, Richards, Scally, Musah, McKennie, Reyna, Weah, Pulisic, Pepi
Bolivia: Lampe, Sagredo, Haquin, Sagredo, Justiniano, Cuellar, Saucedo, Matheus, Fernandez, Miranda, Algaranaz
Anything else catch the eye?
USA are expected to keep a clean sheet on Sunday and could be set for a win to nil at 4/6 by Betfred. Given the quality in their attack, a -2 handicap could also be considered at 8/5 by Betfred.
With USA likely to be dominant on Sunday, they could be backed to win both halves at 13/10 with Betfred.
