Algeria

Switzerland and Algeria meet at BC Place in Vancouver on Thursday night, with kick-off scheduled for 4am BST on Friday. A place in the last 16 is at stake as Murat Yakin's Group B winners face an Algeria side appearing in the knockout stage of a World Cup for only the second time in their history.

Switzerland arrive as deserved favourites and have improved with every game. Their campaign began with a fortunate 1-1 draw against Qatar, where they conceded 3.2 expected goals and were fortunate to escape with a point. Since then, they have looked far more convincing. A 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina produced 2.06 xG and highlighted the attacking quality that had been missing in the opener, before a disciplined 2-1 win over co-hosts Canada secured top spot in Group B.

That victory confirmed Switzerland as only the third nation, alongside Argentina and France, to reach the knockout stage at each of the last four World Cups. Against Canada they controlled long spells without ever dominating completely. Johan Manzambi created the opening goal for Ruben Vargas before adding the second himself after excellent hold-up play from Breel Embolo. Promise David responded within two minutes of coming off the bench, but Switzerland managed the closing stages well despite Canada generating 1.66 xG.

Algeria's route has been considerably more dramatic. Vladimir Petkovic's side opened with a 3-0 defeat to Argentina before keeping their campaign alive with a 2-1 victory over Jordan. Their place in the knockout stage was secured in one of the most dramatic finishes of the tournament against Austria.

Riyad Mahrez, making his first World Cup appearance at 35, scored his first goals in the competition. His equaliser on 89 minutes was followed by another in stoppage time that looked to have sent Algeria through while finally delivering some revenge for the infamous “Disgrace of Gijon” in 1982. Sasa Kalajdzic levelled in the 96th minute, but the draw still proved enough for both nations to qualify ahead of Iran.

The emotion surrounding Algeria's progress has been understandable. Reaching the knockout rounds for the first time since 2014 is a significant achievement. The concern comes when looking beneath the results.

Algeria have looked vulnerable defensively in two of their three matches, conceding 1.26 xGA against Argentina and 1.49 against Austria. Only their display against Jordan, where they allowed 0.63 xGA, suggested genuine defensive control. Switzerland, by comparison, have conceded only 2.50 xGA across the group stage, with the majority arriving during their difficult opening match against Qatar.

There is one factor that should keep this closer than the numbers alone suggest. Petkovic spent seven years managing Switzerland before taking charge of Algeria. Few coaches know this Swiss squad better. He understands Granit Xhaka's influence in midfield, the patterns Yakin prefers in possession and where Switzerland are strongest. That familiarity gives Algeria a tactical advantage few opponents enjoy.

How the Bookies View It

Switzerland are priced at 11/10, implying a 47.6% probability of victory. The draw is available at 47/20, implying 29.9%, while Algeria are 16/5, implying 23.8%.

Over 2.5 goals is priced at 6/5, implying 45.5%, while both teams to score is available at 19/20, implying 51.3%.

Head to Head: First competitive match

These sides have met only twice, both in friendly matches more than 40 years ago. Algeria won 2-1 in Algiers in 1983 before Switzerland responded with a 2-0 victory in 1986. This will be the first competitive meeting between the nations.

Player to Watch: Johan Manzambi

Johan Manzambi has been one of Switzerland's biggest success stories. Introduced from the bench against Qatar and Bosnia and Herzegovina before earning a first start against Canada, he has produced three goals and one assist in only 129 minutes, giving him the best goals-per-90 return in the Swiss squad at 2.09.

His underlying numbers are less spectacular, with 0.8 xG and 0.8 xGOT suggesting his finishing has outperformed the quality of chances created.

Against an Algeria defence that has struggled to deal with runners in behind, Switzerland possess several routes to goal, but Manzambi arrives as the form player.

Predicted Line-ups

Switzerland 4-2-3-1: Kobel; Widmer, Akanji, Elvedi, Rodriguez; Freuler, Xhaka; Sow, Manzambi, Vargas; Embolo.

Algeria 4-3-3: Zidane; Belghali, Bensebaini, Mandi, Ait-Nouri; Bentaleb, Chaibi, Aouar; Maza, Mahrez, Gouiri.

Anything Else Catch the Eye?

Extra time stands out.

Recent World Cup history shows knockout football is often tighter than the market expects. Almost half of knockout matches across the last five tournaments have gone beyond 90 minutes, comfortably above the probability implied by current prices.

This fixture fits that profile. Switzerland deserve favouritism but Algeria are well organised, carry dangerous attacking players and are led by a coach who knows his opponents inside out. Neither side is likely to take unnecessary risks early, increasing the chances of another closely fought contest.

Switzerland should control possession, create the better chances and eventually progress, but this feels far more likely to be decided by fine margins than a comfortable victory. Extra time is the standout betting angle.
