Spain vs England

, KO: 20:00 Jul 14, 2024, Olympiastadion
England

THE curtain closes on Euro 2024 in Berlin on Sunday night, as Spain and England do battle for the coveted Henri Delaunay trophy at the Olympiastadion.

Spain are aiming to conquer the continent for an unprecedented fourth time, while England are bidding to end 58 years of hurt by getting their hands on some silverware for the first time since their 1966 World Cup success.

Luis de la Fuente’s side have been the standout team in the tournament this summer, getting up and running by winning all three of their group games before roaring back from a goal down to thump Euro 2024 shock troops Georgia 4-1 in the round of 16.

La Roja have since sent heavyweight duo Germany and France packing, with Tuesday night’s semi-final victory over Les Bleus bringing up one of my Bet Builders.

As for England, their showings have been unfathomably poor for the most part yet they now find themselves in a second successive Euros final and on the brink of immortality.

In fairness to Gareth Southgate’s side, they did produce their best performance of the competition so far by coming from behind to deservedly defeat the Netherlands 2-1 on Tuesday night, with the Three Lions justifying my faith in them to qualify.

How the bookies view it: Spain to reign supreme

Spain, who will be appearing in a third final across the last five editions of the European Championships, are 6/4 favourites on Betfred.

England are big outsiders at 12/5 (Betfred), while a fifth stalemate inside 90 minutes involving the Three Lions at this summer’s showpiece can be backed at 15/8 (Betfred).

Head to head: England have the edge

Overall, the two nations have come up against each other 27 times, with England claiming top honours on 14 occasions. Spain have 10 victories to their name, while the duo have drawn on only three occasions.

The pair last crossed paths in the Nations League back in October 2018, with England earning a dramatic 3-2 win in Seville thanks to a Raheem Sterling double.

Players to watch: All eyes on Yamal

Spanish boy wonder Lamine Yamal became the youngest-ever goalscorer at the Euros after producing a stunning moment of magic to score against France. The teenage sensation is 7/2 (Betfred) to strike anytime on Sunday.

Harry Kane has been boosted to an eye-catching 5/2 (Betfred) to score in Sunday's final as he goes in search of the Euro 2024 Golden Boot.

Bundling up Kane to have a shot on target alongside a minimum of one Marc Cucurella foul also holds appeal at 4/5 (Betfred). The Spanish left-back has averaged 1.20 fouls per-game on route to the final and that trend should continue given that he will be up against Bukayo Saka.

Predicted line-ups

After missing out against France due to suspension, Spanish defensive duo Dani Carvajal and Robin Le Normand return to the squad and both are expected to be restored to the starting XI.

Substitute Luke Shaw impressed during England’s 2-1 win over the Netherlands, so England boss Gareth Southgate has a big decision to make about who starts at left wing-back.

Spain: Simon; Carvajal, Le Normand, Laporte, Cucurella; Ruiz, Rodri, Olmo; Yamal, Morata, Williams

England: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Guehi; Saka, Mainoo, Rice, Shaw; Bellingham, Foden; Kane

Anything else catch the eye?

While cup finals can often be cagey affairs, backing both teams to score at 11/10 on Betfred is a price that definitely represents value.

BTTS would have been the right wager in all three of Spain’s knockout matches at Euro 2024, while the same bet would have also paid out in each of England’s three outings since emerging from the group stage.

Three of the pair’s six knockout ties combined have ended in a 1-1 draw inside 90 minutes, and a similar scoreline on Sunday night at the Olympiastadion wouldn't come as a surprise.
