Sheffield United vs Brighton and Hove Albion

, KO: 14:00 Feb 18, 2024, Bramall Lane
Brighton and Hove Albion

SHEFFIELD UNITED looked doomed and all but relegated, but they have handed themselves a glimmer of hope with a win in their last match at fellow strugglers Luton Town.

And if they could follow that up on Sunday with a victory against Brighton, the Great Escape could yet be on.

The Blades have endured a miserable return to top flight English football and still sit at the bottom of the league. But that coupon-busting win at Kenilworth Road cut the gap to safety to seven points and stranger things have happened in football.

It was only their third league win of the season and fourth in all competitions in 27 games and Chris Wilder;'s men ended a run of picking up one point from a possible 18 before last weekend.

They face a Brighton side who are in the top half of the table and have ambitions to return to Europe again.

But so far this year they have only won one out of their last five league matches and need to start turning some of their many draws into wins – their eight draws is two more than anyone else in the Premier League.

How the bookies view it

Brighton are solid odds-on favourites here at 8/13 with UniBet. Sheffield United are 4/1 outsiders with bet365 and the draw is 16/5 with William Hill.

Recent head to heads

The clubs met just three weeks ago in the FA Cup also in Yorkshire and Brighton scudded Sheffield United 5-2.
However, United did manage to claim a surprise 1-1 draw at the Amex back in November.

United are actually unbeaten in the last seven league meetings between the teams.

Players to watch

Cameron Archer netted the opening goal in last week's win at Luton and it was his fourth in the league this season. He is 10/3 to score anytime with Paddy Power.

Danny Welbeck has never been known as a prolific hitman in his career, but the 33-year-old has still scored a respectable 20 league goals in 65 starts for the Seagulls and he is 15/8 to score anytime with bet365.

Anything else catch the eye?

Brighton destroyed Sheffield United in the Cup recently and while they might not hit those heights again, they should be too strong for the Blades.

Last week may have given United some hope, but they are up against a decent, well-organised Brighton side and the call here is for an away win and over 2.5 goals at 13/10 with Paddy Power – there were seven goals when they last met – with Brighton being too short to back just to win.

Brighton have won 45 more corners than Sheffield United this season and the Blades have only managed 78 in 24 games – just over three per game on average.

Go for the visitors to win most corners with Brighton having two of a start on the handicaps at 11/10 with bet365.
