PSG will be looking to continue their march towards the Ligue 1 title as they welcome Lyon to the Parc des Princes on Sunday. While the Parisians have not been at the best this season, they are still expected to have the upper hand over Lyon, who are often erratic.
PSG may be five points clear at the top of the standings but they have been far from their best this season. The Parisians have been uncharacteristically erratic this term with the Ligue 1 title set to be their only piece of silverware after crashing out of the Champions League and Coupe de France.
The Champions showed their erratic side last time out as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Rennes. They saw plenty of possession and created numerous goalscoring opportunities but the likes of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe were wasteful in front of goal.
The good news for PSG is that it was only their first home defeat of the season. They had won nine of the previous 10 matches at the Parc des Princes with some one-sided results in that run, including a 5-0 thrashing of Auxerre and a 4-2 victory over Nantes.
It has been a while since Lyon have been involved in a title challenge and they are slowly beginning to look like a mid-table team. They are currently, nine points behind fifth placed Rennes and well off the pace for even a Europa League finish.
While it has generally been a difficult campaign for Lyon, they appear to have found some sort of consistency in recent weeks. Laurent Blanc’s men have drawn their last three matches and were held 1-1 by Nantes in their Ligue 1 fixture prior to the international break.
Lyon have also shown some good form on their recent travels with just one defeat in their last seven away matches. However, the 3-3 draw at Lille in their previous fixture on the road highlights a poor defensive record away from home.
How the bookies view it
PSG have the upper hand among the bookies and are priced at 4/9 by bet365 to claim the win on Sunday. A victory for Lyon is valued at 13/2 by Coral while a draw is set at odds of 4/1 by Paddy Power.
Head to head
PSG have a 31-22 advantage with 16 draws from 69 previous matches against Lyon. The Parisians have also won three of the last four meetings and picked up a 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture back in September with Lionel Messi getting the only goal.
Players to watch
Kylian Mbappe is the leading scorer for PSG with 19 Ligue 1 goals this season and could be backed to find the net on Sunday at 4/5 with bet365. Messi has 13 goals and having scored the winner in the reverse fixture, could be worth keeping an eye on in the same market at evens with bet365.
Lyon will look to Alexandre Lacazette to maintain his fine goalscoring form having found the net 17 times this season. With six goals in his last five matches, the French striker is priced at 12/5 by bet365 to find the net at the Parc des Princes.
Anything else catch the eye?
There were over 3.5 goals in Lyon’s previous away fixture and a repeat could be on the cards at 5/4 with William Hill. Both teams have had a few late showings in recent times and could be backed to score in the second half at 2/1 with bet365.
Given the minimal odds for a straight PSG victory, a win and over 3.5 goals can be considered at 15/8 with bet365.
