Portugal vs Ireland

, KO: 19:45 Jun 11, 2024, Estádio Municipal de Aveiro
Ireland

PORTUGAL have their final warm-up game for the Euros when they welcome Ireland in what could be Cristiano Ronaldo's last game on Portuguese soil.

The footballing icon was an unused sub as Portugal lost to Croatia and wasn't included in their earlier friendly when they beat Finland.

He's so far refused to confirm his plans, but at the age of 39 and a quite staggering 206 caps to his name, it's not a stretch to think the Euros could be his swansong.

And Roberto Martinez's side are packed full of talent and rightly one of the favourites for the trophy.

They face an Ireland side who look rejuvenated somewhat and John O'Shea surely did himself no harm to get the job on a permanent basis when he guided Ireland to a win against Euro 2024 dark horses Hungary and ended their 14-game unbeaten run.

When Ireland beat Scotland in Dublin two years ago, it actually marked the start of a torrid period of setbacks and the Hungarians were the first decent nation Ireland have defeated since then. Their only wins have come against Gibraltar, Armenia, Latvia and Malta.

How the bookies view it: Portugal too strong for the Irish

Portugal are huge odds-on at 2/7 with bet365 and the Republic of Ireland are 15/2 with the draw 9/2.

Recent head to heads: Portugal not a happy hunting ground

Ireland have never won against the hosts on Portuguese soil but got a draw and a narrow defeat when they last met in the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup.

Players to watch:

That man Ronaldo is going for his 129th goal for his country and he is approaching his 12th tournament for his country. It would hardly be a surprise if he netted – as he did against Ireland in their last meeting – and he is odds-on to score anytime with bet365 at 8/13.

Adam Idah was the hero for Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final win over Rangers and scored against Hungary. He is a big price of 5/1 to score anytime with bet365.

Predicted line-ups:

Portugal look set to reinstate Ronaldo from the start and this should be a relatively full-strngth side for Martinez.

Ireland are set to be without Nathan Collins, Chiedozie Ogbene, Gavin Bazunu, Evan Ferguson and John Egan.

Portugal: Costa;,Dalot, A Silva, Dias, Cancelo, Fernandes, Palhinha, Bernardo, Jota, Ronaldo, Leao.

Ireland: Kelleher, Coleman, Omobamidele, O'Shea, O'Brien, Stevens, Szmodics, Knight, Cullen, Johnston, Idah.

Anything else catch the eye?

Portugal are an exciting, attacking side who are justifiably ranked as one of the favourites for the Euros.

They have lost two of their last three friendlies though and with their opening Euro 2024 game fast approaching, you wouldn't want to be steaming into them at silly prices for what is, after all, a glorified warm-up.

They will give you chances though and they have now conceded in their last four matches and that should give an Irish side trying to build on that win against Hungary hope.

The call is for a home win with Ireland scoring too at 15/8 with bet365.

They should be good enough to win this one at half time and full time too at 5/6 with looks a really solid shout – they were 3-0 up against Sweden in March at half time and they are probably similar to the Irish these days.

This match between Portugal and Ireland will be played on Jun 11, 2024 and kick off at 19:45. Check below for our tipsters best Portugal vs Ireland prediction. You may also visit our dedicated betting previews section for the most up to date previews.
