Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur

, KO: 14:00 Feb 6, 2025, Anfield
Tottenham Hotspur

Reaching the EFL Cup Final would give Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou a massive boost but his side hold just a 1-0 lead as they head to Anfield for the second leg of their semi-final with Liverpool.

Postecoglou looked like a dead man walking after a 2-1 home loss to Leicester City left his side hovering too close to the drop zone for comfort and saw his odds slashed for next Premier League manager to be sacked.

But Spurs responded with a 3-0 Europa League win over Elfsborg then followed it up with a much-needed Premier League triumph at Brentford, busting my coupon in the process.

If the big Aussie can now steer them to a big day out at Wembley it will be a remarkable turnaround but Tottenham now face arguably the best team in Europe right now.

Liverpool were disappointing when they lost 1-0 in the first leg of this EFL Cup semi-final but that's just one of two domestic defeats they have suffered all season.

Arne Slot's men are red-hot favourites for the Premier League title after Saturday's battling 2-0 win at Bournemouth kept them six points clear of Arsenal with a game in hand.

The Reds are still on track for an unprecedented Quadruple and Slot will be confident of turning this tie around if his side hit top form.

How the bookies view it: Reds to roar back

Even though Tottenham lead after the first leg, BoyleSports make Liverpool 3/10 favourites to go through, with Postecoglou's side 23/10 outsiders. For a win on the night, Spurs are 15/2 rank outsiders, with Slot's side just 2/9 and the draw paying 5/1.

Recent head to head: Anfield of screams for Spurs

That 1-0 win for Spurs in the first leg was the second meeting of these sides this term, with Liverpool winning 6-3 in the Premier League. Anfield hasn't been a happy hunting ground for Tottenham and you have to go all the way back to 2011 for their last victory there.

Players to watch: Cody a class act

Cody Gakpo has been something of an unsung hero for Liverpool this season, with Mo Salah hogging the headlines on the other flank. The Dutch winger has been superb since countryman Slot took charge and is 6/5 at BoyleSports for anytime scorer.

Dejan Kulusevski has been Tottenham's most consistent player this season and needs just one more goal to hit double figures for the season. The Swede is 9/2 for anytime scorer while Bet365 price him at 6/4 just to have an effort on target.

Probable line-ups

Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to miss out for Liverpool after being injured at the weekend while Joe Gomez is still sidelined. Slot might freshen things up, with Darwin Nunez pushing for a start up front.

Tottenham's horrendous injury issues are clearing up a little and key defender Micky van de Ven could start after getting 45 minutes against Elfsborg last week. New signings Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel also come into contention.

But Cristian Romero, Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Wilson Odobert and Radu Dragusin look set to miss out again.

Liverpool: Alisson, Bradley, Van Dijk, Konate, Tsimikas, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Jones, Gakpo, Salah, Nunez.

Tottenham Hotspur: Kinsky, Porro, Van de Ven, Gray, Davies, Sar, Bissouma, Bergvall, Son, Kulusevski, Richarlison.

Anything else catch the eye?

It was a surprise when the first leg produced just one goal as it had been raining goals in this fixture before that. The last two meetings at Anfield have ended in 4-3 and 4-2 wins for Liverpool so it bodes well for plenty of action.

It's hard finding value with over 3.5 strikes just 4/6 but combining BTTS with over 1.5 first-half goals looks decent at 29/20 in a BoyleSports bet builder.

This could turn into a fiery game with a place in the final at stake so card and foul bets look like decent options. Spurs kid Lucas Bergvall was lucky to escape a red in the first leg and he's 10/11 at Bet365 to commit over 1.5 fouls.
