LIVERPOOL bounced back from their Old Trafford agony by battering Bournemouth 9-0 but this Anfield clash with Newcastle will provide a truer test of their Premier League resilience.
I expected a response from Jurgen Klopp's men against the Cherries and that's how it panned out as the rout brought up all three of my recommended bets.
Having picked up just two points from their first three Premier League games, it was a much-needed confidence boost for Liverpool and Klopp will now hope to string a run of wins together.
Newcastle are dangerous opponents though and Eddie Howe's side have already given Manchester City a bloody nose this season, drawing 3-3 at St James' Park in a thriller.
The Magpies are unbeaten in their first five games, drawing three, and look poised to push on this season after further heavy investment in the squad, with Alexander Isak the latest big-money signing.
Their new Saudi owners want Newcastle to be challenging Liverpool and City for the big prizes within a few years and this trip to Anfield gives them a chance to lay down a marker.
How the bookies view it
Newcastle look a bit overpriced with SBK making them 19/2 for an Anfield win. Liverpool's best price is just 1/3 with the same firm and the draw pays 5/1 at QuinnBet.
Recent head to head
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 11 games against Newcastle, with only four of those matches ending in draws. Both Premier League meetings ended in wins for the Reds last term, with a 3-1 triumph at Anfield followed by a 1-0 victory in the north east.
Players to watch
Luis Diaz has been Liverpool's most impressive forward so far this season and netted twice in that mauling of Bournemouth. The Colombian winger is 19/12 with SBK for anytime scorer and that looks good value.
Allan-Saint Maximin rescued a point for Newcastle at Wolves on Sunday with a stunning volley. He gave City's defence a torrid time at St James' and will fancy his chances here if he can shake off a knock to start. The Magpies maverick is 6/1 at Bet365 for anytime scorer which looks generous.
Anything else catch the eye?
These teams have treated us to some of the most exciting games in Premier League history and this could be another thriller if Newcastle try to go toe-to-toe with Liverpool.
The Reds have looked a little suspect at the back so BTTS appeals at 10/11 with Betfred while you have to go to over 3.5 goals to get into odds-against at 13/10 with SBK. Backing over 1.5 first-half goals paid off for me at Anfield on Saturday and a repeat here also pays 13/10 with Ladbrokes.
Unibet always have some interesting stats bet and I like the look of the 11/10 they offer here on over 1.5 Liverpool offsides because I'd be surprised if Newcastle parked the bus.
