KILMARNOCK have hit their stride at the perfect time in the SPFL Championship title race and a win at Greenock Morton in this Friday night showdown would send them seven points clear at the top.
Persuading Derek McInnes to drop down a division for his managerial comeback always looked like a shrewd move by Killie and his methods are starting to pay off after a sticky start.
A run of six wins and a draw in their last seven league games has taken Kilmarnock four points clear of shock troops Arbroath at the top and they now have the chance to pile more pressure on the Red Lichties ahead of their game at Partick on Saturday.
Killie beat the Jags themselves last weekend to move further clear although I was left cursing a late consolation goal for Thistle after tipping the Rugby Park men at -1 in the handicap.
The finishing line is in sight with just five games to play but this trip to Cappielow is a potential banana skin as Morton have become hard to beat since Dougie Imrie took charge.
Ton ruined my deadly double last weekend as another late goal saw Ayr United claim a 1-1 draw in Greenock but Imrie's side have still lost just twice in their last 10 games.
That has moved them seven points clear of the relegation places but Imrie won't relax until safety is guaranteed and will be determined to take something against Kilmarnock.
How the bookies view it
Kilmarnock are favourites for this one but are still a decent price at 17/16 with SBK which will attract plenty of interest on their current form. Greenock Morton's best price is 16/5 at SkyBet while the draw pays 23/10 at Betfair and shouldn't be discounted.
Recent head to head
This is the fifth meeting of these teams this season and Kilmarnock are undefeated so far, with two wins and two draws. One of those victories came on their last trip to Cappielow as Blair Alston and Oli Shaw sealed a 2-0 victory (below).
Players to watch
Kilmarnock goalscorer bets have been good for me of late, with Shaw and Kyle Lafferty delivering in the last two weeks. Both have been in fine form in front of goal but I'm going for Shaw here as he netted on his last outing at Cappielow. The former Hibs and Ross County forward is 7/4 at McBookie for anytime scorer.
Gozie Ugwu is the focal point up front for Morton and is due a goal after a nine-game drought. The former Raith forward is 2/1 at McBookie to get back on track.
Anything else catch the eye?
Morton have scored in their last three games while Kilmarnock have conceded in their last three outings so both teams to score appeals at 49/50 with Unibet.
All three league meetings between these sides this season have produced 11 corners or more so that makes over 10.5 corners a decent option at evens with Bet365.
There was bad blood at Rugby Park in December with five yellows and a red dished out. One of them went to Lewis Strapp and the Morton defender has six bookings to his name this term. He's 5/2 with McBookie to collect another here.
