, KO: 20:00 , AFG Arena
Poland women

Germany women and Poland women will get their Women's European Championship underway on Friday, 4 July when they meet at the AFG Arena in St. Gallen.

Germany are among the favourites to win the tournament, so the pressure will be on to perform in their opening match.

There is less pressure on Poland, who aren't expected to even make it out of the group in Switzerland. Could they pull off a shock result on Friday?

How the bookies view it: Germany are big favourites

Germany are the overwhelming favourites with the bookies for this one, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. BoyleSports have priced a Germany win as short as 1/16, while a victory for Poland has been priced at 28/1. The draw, which would be a great result for the Poles, has been priced at 11/1.

Head to head: Advantage Germany

Interestingly, these two sides were also paired together in qualifying for this tournament, and it was Germany who came out on top in both matches. Die Nationalelf won 4-1 on home soil before winning 3-1 in Poland later in the same week. Poland women are looking for their first-ever triumph over Germany on Friday.

Players to watch: Schuller to steal the show?

While there are plenty of bright attacking players in the German ranks, there is no doubt that Lea Schuller is the star of the show.

The Bayern Munich striker will have her eyes set on not only winning the Women's Euros this summer, but also winning the Golden Boot award, and she has every chance.

Unlike some other players competing at the Euros, Schuller is in red hot form at the minute. The 27-year-old has scored ten goals in her last seven appearances for club and country, so it would almost be a shock if she didn't get on the scoresheet against Poland.

If Schuller can shine at the Euros, then a big money move to the US or to another big European league could also be on the cards.

Predicted line-ups

Germany elected not to play any warm-up matches before the tournament, so there is very little indication of what starting XI they could play here. For Poland, things are a little bit more cut and dry, but they will be gutted to be without Martyna Brodzik, who has been forced to depart from the squad with an injury.

Germany women: Berger – Gwinn, Minge, Knaak, Kett – Senss, Lohman – Cerci, Freigang, Buhl –  Schuller

Poland women: Szemik – Slowinska, Szymczak, Dudek, Wiankowska – Pawollek, Achcinska – Kamczyk, Tomasiak, Kamczyk – Pajor

Anything else catch the eye?

Goals, goals and more goals – that's what you can expect from this German side and they have been electric in recent outings. During the recent UEFA Nations League group phase, they only failed to score four goals or more in one of their six matches. Germany to score over 3.5 goals on Friday has been priced at 1/1 by BoyleSports.
