Estonia vs Sweden

, KO: 17:00 Sep 9, 2023, A Le Coq Arena
Sweden

Sweden travel to Estonia for a European Championship qualifying fixture as they seek the win to spark their campaign to life in Group F. The Estonians are competitive enough at home to make things interesting but Sweden will be counting on their superior quality and should have the upper hand here.

Estonia were regarded as one of the weakest teams in the qualifiers and their displays so far in Group F reflects their status. Thomas Haberli’s men are second bottom on the standings having picked up just one draw and suffered two defeats in their opening three matches.

Overall, it has been a struggle for Estonia to pick up positive results as they head into Saturday’s clash winless in their last four matches across all competitions, suffering three defeats in that run. One of the defeats was a 3-0 hammering by Belgium in their previous qualifying fixture.

A bit of good news for Estonia is that the defeat to Belgium was their first loss at home in the last five matches across all competitions. However, they have mostly cracked minnows like San Marino, Malta and Lithuania with the Belgians representing their first quality opponents in front of their fans.

With Belgium and Austria also in the same group, it was always going to be a tricky qualifying campaign for Sweden. They have not started on the best note as they sit seven points off the pace after claiming just one win from their opening three matches.

The Swedes were beaten 2-0 by Austria in their previous qualifying fixture. However, beyond their poor showings in the qualifiers Janne Andersson’s men have something to build on having won six of their last eight matches across all competitions.

The major problem for Sweden is a lack of discipline at the back as they have struggled defensively even against the lower ranked sides. They travel to Estonia with just one clean sheet in their last five matches across all competitions.

How the bookies view it

Despite their poor start to the qualifiers, Sweden are still considered overwhelming favourites among the bookies at 4/11 with Unibet. Estonia have been installed as outsiders at home at 9/1 by Paddy Power while a draw is set at odds of 4/1 by BoyleSports.

Head to head

Sweden have never lost to Estonia having claimed six wins and two draws from eight previous matches. The last meeting between both teams was a friendly in 2021 which ended 1-0 in favour of the Swedes.

Players to watch

Henri Anier often features in attack for Estonia and will be the one to watch on Saturday. The forward has four goals in the last five international matches across all competitions and is priced at 10/3 by bet365 to get on the score sheet.

Alexander Isak has made a fine start to the season for Premier League side Newcastle United and will be keen to carry that form into the national team. He often leads the line for Sweden and is priced at 21/20 by bet365 to get on the score sheet.

Anything else catch the eye?

With Estonia and Sweden often unconvincing at the back, both teams could be backed to score at 6/5 with William Hill. The Swedes have seen over 2.5 goals in four of their last five matches and a repeat js priced at 4/5 with bet365 while over 3.5 goals can also be considered at 21/10 with BetVictor.

Sweden have the superior squad and with a comfortable victory expected, a -1 handicap can be considered at 21/20 with bet365. Given their attacking quality, they could also be backed to score in both halves at 6/5 with bet365.
