WEDNESDAY night heralds the start of a potentially season defining nine days for Steven Gerrard and Rangers.
The Gers have two colossal contests looming against Celtic and Young Boys respectively, however, before each of those mouthwatering encounters takes place, Rangers travel to Pittodrie for a midweek meeting with old foes Aberdeen,
Rangers demolished the Dons 5-0 at Ibrox back in September and after hitting Hearts for five on Sunday, Gerrard's Gers will be back on the goal hunt in the Granite city.
Standing in Rangers way is an Aberdeen outfit who are starting to look like their old selves after racking up 13 points from the last 15 on offer to them.
Consequently, Derek McInnes' men have shot up to third spot in the Scottish Premiership and therefore Aberdeen will go into this showdown with free-scoring Rangers high in confidence.
The Betting Odds
Despite Aberdeen's recent upturn in form a home win on Wednesday night is priced at huge odds-against of 11/2 (Ladbrokes) and a share of the spoils is also deemed unlikely at 7/2 (PaddyPower)
Rangers will know there is no room for error in the north east if they are to keep pace with Celtic at the top of the table and that can perhaps be attributed to the Bears being big favourites at 8/15 (Betfred) to bag a sixth league win on the spin.
The Betting Angles
Given the fluency and ferocity that both of the Old Firm are playing with this season, punters are having to dig deep when backing either of the Glasgow giants, however, I suspect this battle between Aberdeen and Rangers could be slightly tighter than what the betting suggests.
Indeed, Aberdeen were crushed in the corresponding fixture, however, the Dandies are much-improved since the Autumn and they should be a different animal inside a packed out Pittodrie.
The Dons have scored in seven of their last eight matches and in Sam Cosgrove they possess one of the deadliest strikers in the division – the big Englishman has banged in 18 goals in 22 appearances thus far.
Rangers rearguard have at times struggled to shackle strong and physical forwards this season and that coupled with the hosts recent resurgent form has me attracted to the 4/6 (William Hill) on offer for Aberdeen to once again hit the back of the net on home turf.
However, at the other end of the park McInnes' troops will be hard tasked when trying to tame red-hot Rangers and their talisman striker Alfredo Morelos who has scored five goals in nine appearances against Aberdeen.
The Colombian hitman took his goal tally for the season to an eye-catching 25 last weekend and I'm really surprised to see Morelos priced at odds-against of 21/20 (UniBet) to make the net bulge on Wednesday night – a bet that will attract plenty of punters from the blue half of Glasgow.
Whether or not Morelos gets on the scoresheet remains to be seen, however, Rangers are aiming to score in their eighth consecutive match and with that in mind, the 5/4 (Betfred) on offer for Rangers to score 2+ goals and for Rangers to take five or more corners appeals – a recommended bet that I have successfully tipped already this season.
Furthermore, the aforementioned combination would have generated profit in Rangers last away day at Feyenoord, not to mention the Light Blues have scored two or more goals in their last eight matches across all competitions – and six of that sequence has seen Rangers take five or more corners on each occasion.
