Everton went into the international break on the back of a devastating home defeat to Bournemouth, in which they threw away a 2-0 lead in the 87th minute to lose 3-2.
In the first week back after the break, the Toffees have once again thrown away a two-goal advantage to lose, this time at Villa Park.
The loss, combined with Man Utd's win at Southampton, has seen Sean Dyche strengthen his unwanted footing as the outright favourite to be the next Premier League manager to be sacked, which has only increased interest in the identity of the next Everton manager and what any new arrival would do to a broken side.
Next Everton manager – The projected favourites
David Moyes
David Moyes is seen as the most likely manager to take over from Sean Dyche should the club decide to axe him. Moyes and Everton have a long history together, given that the Scotsman was in charge at Goodison Park for 11 years between 2002 and 2013.
During that period, Moyes regularly had Everton competing for European football, and that was a feat he repeated at West Ham in his most recent job. The immediate task at hand for Moyes would be to ensure the club's final season at Goodison Park doesn't end in relegation, and his affinity with the club and the stadium puts him in with a great chance of landing the job.
Graham Potter
Graham Potter has been out of work since Chelsea sacked him in April 2023, with the 49-year-old seemingly waiting for a way back into the Premier League. Potter has turned down several jobs overseas since his dismissal at Stamford Bridge, including the Ajax job but the idea of leading Everton into a new era in their brand new stadium could tempt him.
Potter would give fans the style of football they crave at Goodison Park after being bogged down by Dyche's relatively conservative and old-fashioned football, but this would undoubtedly be the biggest test he's faced yet.
Abel Ferreira
Abel Ferreira is a name not known by many fans in the English game, but he is reportedly a man admired greatly by the man expected to complete a takeover at Everton, John Textor. Textor is the majority shareholder at Brazilian club Botafogo, so he has had a first-hand look at how Ferreira operates as the manager of Palmeiras, the club that have won the last two league titles in Brazil.
While Textor has come out to deny that he is already in talks with potential replacements for Dyche, the bad result at the weekend is only likely to intensify rumours.
