I missed all of yesterday's racing and haven't gotten around to watching replays, so I can't really comment on the performances of yesterday's selections. The results suggest I'd be wasting my time watching them, and I can only assume they ran considerably below expectations.
Rizzel and I have concentrated solely on the flat meeting at Goodwood, which promises to be a cracking spectacle with some well-known names coming out to play.
Cairnzy's Tips
Electrolyte 8/1 EW – Goodwood 2.25
Aidan O'Brien's The Parthenon comes here with a big chance under jockey Ryan Moore in this Group 2 Vintage Stakes, following a solid maiden victory at Gowran Park. However, he faced a tough challenge that day, and was made to work all the way to the line for that victory. The subsequent form for that maiden win looks quite weak on paper and although he's to be respected, I think he's worth taking on.
My dart landed on Archie Watson's Electrolyte, who at 8/1 could represent an appealing each-way option for bettors who wish to take on the O'Brien runner. Owned by the powerful Wathan Racing team, the Archie Watson-trained two-year-old made a striking debut when winning over 6f at Ayr. He followed up with another pleasing display when narrowly missing out by a nose in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. My selection finished fifth of six most recently in the July Stakes at Newmarket, a race that was eventually won by Aiden O'Brien's Whistlejacket. Electrolyte tried to go toe to toe with the O'Brien runner and was simply outclassed and out paced before fading back into fifth place. My selection takes a step up in trip to 7f, which I think will suit him well. He has to improve on the back of his previous run, but he's a lightly raced sort and it's too early to write him off at this level.
English Oak 7/2 – Goodwood 3.00
What a cracking little race, with cases being made for nearly every runner in this field. You've Noble Dynasty who brings in recent Group winning form from his win at Newmarket last month. Kinross is an all-time favourite of mine, he's not hit the heights this season as I expected but he's a two-time winner of this contest and drops back into calmer waters after a below-par run in Group 1 company last time out. Tiber Flow bounced back to winning ways in a Group 3 recently for trainer William Haggas, while Audience disappointed last time out but prior, he won the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, beating some nice sorts such as Charyn and Inspiral.
With all that form mentioned above, I'm taking neither of those horses as my selection and opted for the upcoming and unexposed English Oak, who takes on his biggest task to date. Like my first selection, English Oak is also owned by the Wathan Racing team. English Oak has been one of the most talked about horses this season, winning stylishly at Haydock and Ascot in his previous two outings. Of course, this demands a lot more given his two previous victories were in Class 2 and Class 3 handicaps, but the manner in which he went about his business in those races suggests to me that he holds all the cards to take this step up in class in his stride.
Ground conditions at Goodwood are currently good to soft but with the forecast weather at Goodwood to hit in the high 20s tomorrow, I can see the ground drying out a bit throughout the day. English Oak has won on good and soft ground in his previous two runs, so he seems versatile when it comes to ground conditions. Fingers crossed for a Wathan Racing and Doyler quickfire double… If only it was that easy eh?
Rizzel's Tips
Gregory 10/1 EW- Goodwood 3.35
Tipping up an each-way selection when there's only two places up for grabs isn't normally my style, but with Kyprios being a dominant force over two mile and further, I think it's the wise choice to go each-way with Gregory, who could pick up the pieces if the favourite underperforms.
I've always had a soft spot for Gregory, so it could be my heart ruling my head by sticking him up for this race, but I'm going to stick to my guns. John and Thady Gosden's horses weren't firing at the start of the season, so in hindsight, Gregory's return to action was a satisfactory one. He looked in need of the run that day, and he looked in need of further, which has been the case for the best part of the last year. He was relatively weak in the market before the off, which was another indicator that he wasn't 100% ready.
After that race, he went to Royal Ascot for the Gold Cup which was a step too far for the trip. He has been running over 14f and below for his entire career, and the step up to 2m 4f for the first time was a big too far. He was tailed off in the end, but you can't base his chances of today's race solely on that run, as his form of last year and even in the York race this year reads well. The winner has since won another Group 2 at Newmarket under a penalty, and the fourth-placed horse won a Group 2 at the Curragh.
I think today's trip could be the ideal distance for Gregory. He has a very strong pedigree for stamina, being by Golden Horn and out of a Galileo mare, so I'd like to think that there is more to come now he's up what I believe is a suitable trip. The ground and course isn't going to be a problem as he recorded a very nice success at this track in a Listed race on just his second start, being Klondike by 3L, who has since become a solid Listed/Group 3 level horse.
Kiwano 20/1 EW – Goodwood 4.10
It could be a terrible idea going against John & Sean Quinn's Lord Riddiford in this race, but I do think Kiwano has an outstanding chance and I'll take my chances.
Lord Riddiford is going for the four-timer in this specific race, he has won the last three renewals which is some going, but it's also a bit of handicapping genius from the trainers as they have got him to win at this track and do very little in the next 12 months and nothing has been done about it, but fair play for making a mockery of our handicapping system and if it's not going to change, crack on and keep at it. However, despite that horse going for the fourth win in this race and is once again handicapped to run well, he is now a 9-year-old and it would be a shame if the others in this race weren't good enough to beat him on ground which might be getting slightly too quick for hin.
The one I really liked was Kiwano, trained by George Baker. George has had a good time of things in the last couple of months, it has dried up slightly in recent weeks but Kiwano managed to win at the Racing League meeting at odds of 66/1 at Yarmouth last week. That race was over 6f, so the quick turnaround at 5f on a very quick track poses different problems, but from what I saw at Yarmouth I think he will relish the conditions of this race. The ground at Yarmouth was good to firm, but they didn't set the quickest of times, being over 2+ seconds slower than the average, but Kiwano was cruising in contention, and was the last off the bridle, showing he has the high cruising speed to be able to drop back to 5f. Not only that, it should help him settle better as he was relatively keen in the first half of the race, taking a pull on Andrew Mullen's arms, but it didn't effect his chances, and even at the finish he looked green when hitting the front when having nothing close to him.
The form will likely be strong as the Racing League meetings are strongly contested due to the great prize money on offer, so today's step up in grade isn't a concern. Also, in terms of the trip, Kiwano has been a very good performer over 5f on the AW, which has seen him beat the likes of Tone The Barone, and he has been a close third behind Live In The Dream who went on to win a Group 1.

Fav Jet Setting Jim would have beaten the selection lto had he not fallen at the last but I’m giving him another chance here over a slightly longer trip and a return to a right handed track. To be beaten 6L in a grade 1 by Spillanes Tower is by far the best form on offer in this race.
6.00
Very little to go on here but a few Whispers going around for Twomey’s horse. He won it last year with a debutant.
6.40 Yaxchilan 7/4
This is an awful race. A 3yr old maiden with the highest rated just 74 tells you all you need to know of the quality, so the once raced fav should be able to take advantage
7.10 Plume Noir 9/1 ew 6 places
The big race of the day is another very competitive race and arguments can be made for most of the runners.
I’ve gone for PN as Colin Keane has taken the ride instead of sticking with Lady Lunette who he won on last time.
He’s not got a great draw but he’s a top jockey and can hopefully steer him to victory.
7.45 Reidh 9/2
Good to see Richard Fahey sending a horse over and as I’ve said before UK raiders don’t usually go home empty handed so even though he’s gone up 10lbs for his win lto I’m sure he’s not coming to breath the Atlantic Air.
One at a price though is Brains who is currently 33/1.
7f is his trip and if he can get out of the stalls and lead they might have a hard time passing him so worth a nibble ew.
