I was trying to avoid taking chances yesterday, we were almost rewarded but despite identifying a good bit of risk, I still included Shamran a horse who was the only one not to place. With Southwell on, I started the day looking at Scott Dixon's runners, most of his were at Wolverhampton, I couldn't justify any of them but typically my main fancy of the day was beaten by one of his at 80/1…

Cover Point 8/1 four places – 17.55 Newcastle

I was looking for an outsider to chance in this and nothing was overly jumping off the page despite a good few top combinations contesting this race. Badri was almost settled upon, a horse getting very well weighted having not won since with Julie Camacho – the trainer I am actually going to take a chance with.

Julie Camacho's recent trips to Newcastle haven't offered much enthusiasm for today but these owners are fully respected and their 3-year-old Cover Point has two successes to his name already, he didn't show too much on the polytrack at Lingfield last time but the straight track at Newcastle may prove more to his liking.

The horse won on a maiden stakes race as a 2-year-old last September rated 88, having only one rival within a length, the Jack Channon Staincliff who won his next two. Sandown is a track that takes some getting so I am encouraged by that as the last furlong and a half at Newcastle is uphill and can catch a few out.

The horse hasn't really shown anything in this grade which isn't ideal but sits only 1lb above his last win, when beating a decent enough Class 4 handicapper Curious Rover. It's still early enough days so I am happy to include with an extra place on offer he can certainly out-run one of the four ahead in the market.

Pursuit of Truth 7/2 four places – 18.55 Newcastle

Owen Burrows doesn't have many horses but must be one of the notable trainers in the industry, we had a reminder of that at the weekend when Anmaat went in at 40/1. Off of that, his horse at Newcastle caught the eye, the bookies aren't taking any chances but I thought Jason Watson's 5 wins from 9 rides suggested an honest effort is on the card.

Today's selection was 2nd to New Kings Road who was put up 13 days ago, Jim Crowley was at work on him early enough but from a good position he was able to maintain his effort to finish 2nd. The uphill finish at Newcastle can only suit on breeding so this Sea the Stars gelding is entitled to carry on improving nudged up a pound to 69.

Barleybrown is a clear danger winner here two starts back with Billy Loughnane on board, the horse was then 3rd 5lbs higher in an apprentice race but Billy is back on today and along with Jewel Maker seemed the most likely dangers.

Striking A Pose 8/1 four places – 15.53 Exeter

This is a very tricky race with some interesting unexposed propositions heading the market, after looking at Morfee who has a long absence to overcome and Made For You for steps up in Class 4lbs below his recent win it is the top-weight Striking a Pose that I am hoping is ready to go returning from a 6 month absence.

Joe Tizzard started the season off flying, having a good September with the yard beginning to pick up again recently having had a winner on Sunday and Monday. The 3lbs taken off by the decent young apprentice isn't a lot but the horse is undefeated here in 4 starts so we can hope he'll be giving it a good go to retain that record.

He only returned to hurdling this year for the first time since 2021, winning here twice, latterly over today's C&D before pulling up at Uttoxeter and finishing out the back in April at Plumpton. Today's apprentice was claiming 5lbs when last winning, it was a very comfortable win in an ordinary enough race, he is 8lbs higher today but on balance I thought his price was fair enough.

Pockley 6/1 four places – 20.25 Newcastle

Pockley winning may well result in the trainer being asked a few questions afterwards, he has only beat 10 of the 100 horses he has faced since his last decent performance back in March, which was a nose 2nd over today's C&D in a Class 4 rated effectively 73.

His previous 10 runs have been on turf, he rocks up today rated 47, 26lbs lower which means all form can be chucked out the window because surely this horse is going to be going close in the next few outings. He didn't really see much grass last season but on his first AW start after his 2022 turf campaign, the horse was 3rd, then 2nd both over C&D before winning dropped a furlong but still 13lbs higher than today.

He is a bit of a risk as much of his recent races have been 5f, but given the March result, I'll include him. The trainer's last winner was a week ago, that horse have a relatively similar poor run of form, if we're on too early, we'll make sure to catch him again.

Given the price, I thought the bookies were just being tight given the return to the AW but I decided to check oddschecker and it seems the horse was bigger than 20s.

WHAT IS A LUCKY 15 BET?

A Lucky 15 bet consists of 15 unique bets, covering every possible combination that comes from backing four selections. The 15 bets are broken down like this:

– 1 fourfold accumulator

– 4 trebles, with each treble omitting one of your selections

– 6 doubles, again covering every possible combination

– 4 singles

The attraction of a Lucky 15 is that it offers many more ways to win than a standard accumulator. A Lucky 15 uses both your acca and your singles as well as producing trebles and doubles that reward you for correctly calling 2/4 or 3/4 of your selections. To cover the 15 separate bets, a Lucky 15 uses your stake 15 times. If you were to place £1 on a Lucky 15, you would be staking £15 in total across the various bets.
