Thursdays NAP of the Day

When last involved, it was not to be for Attaboyarchie, who certainly ran a good race at big odds, finishing in a respectable third.

Chelmsford - 19:30

Antiphon

8/1

After a quiet start to the week, the Nap is back in action on Thursday, where a race at Chelmsford catches the eye. That race is the 19:30 contest, a five-furlong handicap of the Class 5 variety, ahead of which Antiphon rates as a decent bet at odds of 8/1.

A no-show over six furlongs at Southwell last time out following a break, tonight’s drop in trip, coupled with a drop in grade, could easily spark a revival from a horse that knows how to get competitive at this level.

Not to be ignored when racing at Class 5 level

One win from one previous go at Chelmsford, the six-year-old, who has slipped to 3 lbs below his last winning mark, is no stranger to running well in this grade.

If we go back to the summer months, we can see that he went close in a Class 5 contest at Windsor, doing so from much higher in the weights, while he finished second (of 8) when he last raced in a Class 5 on the all-weather, again doing so from a considerably higher handicap mark.

To be honest, his Class 5 record in general is promising, with the gelding delivering three wins and six places from 13 runs. From six five-furlong runs at this level, he has two wins and two places to his name, with both of those wins coming from higher in the weights.

Interestingly, this will be his first ever go over five furlongs on the all-weather, but he’s never finished out of the places in Class 5 company when racing on an artificial surface, while it’s worth mentioning that he came home in front on his only previous visit to Chelmsford.

Sean Bowen has been in decent form of late and is thus an interesting booking in the saddle, while trainer Michael Keady has seemingly had his runners in decent heart in January too.

Last but certainly not least, this runner has twice beaten the early market leader, and is now better off at the weights than for both of those runs, which when put together with all the other positives, makes odds of 8/1 look a little too large for my liking. Such odds offer value to those who seek it.

Based on a £10 level-stakes example, the Nap of the Day (after 82 Naps) has a running P/L of +£55.00 (since switching to being published here (10/09/2024) rather than on the ‘Nap of the Day' page).

For those interested, here’s a monthly profit and loss breakdown (again based on a £10 level-stakes example):

September 2024 = +£34.00

October 2024 = +£6.00

November 2024 = +£15.00

December 2024 = +£50.00

2024 Overall = +105.00
