January hasn’t exactly been a vintage month for the ‘Nap of the Day’, but when you’re looking to go against the curve, that’s the way it goes at times. Let’s see what Thursday brings.
Southwell 13:42 |
Glorious Angel |
12/1 |
With one National Hunt meeting already gone and another due for an early morning inspection, I’m focusing on the all-weather action on Thursday.
At Southwell, ahead of the 13:42, I like the look of Glorious Angel, who isn’t exactly a stranger to running well at this venue, while she’s not too badly handicapped either, helping to make odds of 12/1 look somewhat chunky.
The mare doesn’t turn her nose up at Southwell races
Easily beaten over seven furlongs at Newcastle last time out following a break, Grant Tuer’s mare has shown a fondness for Southwell, while this return to six furlongs could also be in favour.
When we last saw her race over this distance, at Ripon back in May, she finished second from 2 lbs higher in the weights, doing so in a race that wasn’t much worse than this.
In general, though she hasn’t been an overly frequent winner, her Class 3 record is not to be sneezed at, with the five-year-old finishing second in three of her last four races at this level, two of which came over this distance from higher marks.
Twice a winner at Southwell, she’s yet to finish worse than fourth in four races at the Nottinghamshire track, with her most recent C&D effort not looking much on paper, but she got relatively close to two horses rated easily above anything in here, so I certainly wouldn’t discount her on that basis.
Grant Tuer is far from a trainer who struggles at this venue, showcasing a more than fair 17.5% strike rate at Southwell in the last 12 months. His win/place strike rate during that time stands at 42.5%, so it’s probably fair to say that he knows how to prepare one for this course.
Now 2 lbs below her last all-weather winning mark, this is a horse who ticks a few too many boxes to be as big as 12/1. With such odds on offer, she’s well worthy of support as far as I’m concerned.
Based on a £10 level-stakes example, the Nap of the Day (after 88 Naps) has a running P/L of -£5.00 (since switching to being published here (10/09/2024) rather than on the ‘Nap of the Day' page).
For those interested, here’s a monthly profit and loss breakdown (again based on a £10 level-stakes example):
September 2024 = +£34.00
October 2024 = +£6.00
November 2024 = +£15.00
December 2024 = +£50.00
2024 Overall = +105.00
