Quddwah was a winning selection for us on Saturday, but ultimately it was a below-par day with the remaining three selections losing.
Lou Lou's Gift was a tad keen in the opening two furlongs which probably cost her in the end. Carrytheone again had zero luck in running, he stayed on to finish fourth, but I believe with a clear passage that horse would have won. There is a win around the corner for that horse and he is worth looking out for next time. Remaadd plugged on in his race without really threatening.
The current profit and loss for the month is now +3.705
Cairnzy's Tips
Songo 15/2 EW – Stratford 4.00
This looks wide open but Songo just about represents an each-way play at 15/2 and he could represent some value against those towards the head of the market.
My selection showed good form last summer when winning back to back races at Newtown Abbot, winning both races impressively by 11L. He was unable to back up those victories when sent handicapping at the same venue, finishing seventh and a whopping 29L of the eventual winner Sebastopol. Songo was then given a 50-day break before competing at Kempton in a novice hurdle race which saw him finish third but miles of the winner Destorytheevidence who bolted up to beat my selection by 38L.
Songo switched hands to Richard Hawker in May and the change of trainer has seemed to point Songo back in the right direction. His first outing for his new stable resulted in a second-place finish at Newtown Abbott. He was beaten 7 and a half lengths by the winner Clearance. That effort has since received a boost with Clearance going on to win next out in a class 3. Harry Cobden who has ridden the horse the last five times is booked to retake the ride.
Fever Dream 7/4 – Perth 4.15
This contest also looks wide open with plenty of these arriving in good form or on the back of good efforts in previous outings. Fever Dream isn't the most exciting of prices at 7/4, but on paper, he looks the most likely winner in my opinion.
I'm a massive fan of Christian Williams and his runners are always to be respected. Jumps is more Rizzels game, but from checking his selections out over the years I noticed he tends to place his horses very well. There was a lot to like my selections return to racing in March, going down by a length and a half to Double Powerful who has gone on to boost the form by winning next time out. The pair broke well clear of the third that day and it was a good effort on the back of a layoff from the track.
Fever Dream took a step forward to get off the mark over C&D last month, taking the step up in trip to 3m with ease to win by four and a half lengths. After watching a replay of the race, I have to say I was impressed in how this lad traveled. He eased into contention on the bridle, jumped nicely, and was never really asked a whole lot by jockey Jack Tudor. A 12lb rise for that win looks fair, but given he's completely unexposed in this sphere, he looks the most solid play to get the job done.
Rizzel's Tips
Celandine 5/2 – Chantilly 3.30
At first, Arabie was my pick for this race but after looking through the race further, I swapped him for the filly, Celandine.
I'll touch on Arabie first. He has done very little wrong and will get a lot of attention in this race because he is a Group 3 winner over today's C&D from last month. However, the more I look at that race, I think his track position was key to the success as he managed to sit prominently and kept rolling in front after he came under pressure with a few furlongs to go. The runner-up was towards the back of the field and was motoring down the outside, and I think if that horse was positioned towards the front she would've beaten the Karl Burke horse. Similar comments can be applied to his York race when he raced from the front and showed his experience against unraced horses. The form of that race has been boosted, as the runner-up has won since, and the third finished second in Albany at Royal Ascot. In hindsight, I don't think Arabie would've won that race if the other horses had experience and though the form looks strong, with the runner-up who was flying at the finish, he didn't win on his next start and then scrambled home as 5/6F the time after, so is the form as strong as it looks? I'm not sure.
Celandine has done nothing but improve from run to run for Ed Walker. The only piece of form which is worth talking about is her win in Listed company at Newmarket a couple of weeks ago when she looked like a very nice filly. She is a quick starter, which will be key at Chantilly as she is drawn in Stall 5 and if she can break from the stalls like she has been doing, she will be able to drift across and grab the rail or a prominent position. The form looks solid, as the third-placed horse won the Group 2 at Newmarket on Friday and the fourth-placed horse was second to Aesterius in a Listed race who was previously fifth in the Norfolk which looks like a strong race as Whistlejacket bolted up at Newmarket this week (was fourth in the Norfolk).
Celandine seems a relentless galloper at the sprint trips. When she has come under pressure in both of her wins she just keeps going and breaks the hearts of the challengers who try to eyeball her. The best part of her performance at Newmarket was the finish when she met the rising ground and started to pull away again at the finish, and to my eye, she won quite comfortably. She has to prove herself on a different surface today, as the ground will probably have soft in the description, but her sire (Kingman) has produced many horses who like a slower surface, so there's optimism that she'll handle it.
Dinons 9/2 – Perth 3.45
Brian Ellison is a trainer who definitely goes under the radar, but he seems to improve horses when they come to him from other yards and I think the 11-year-old, Dinons can win this despite carrying close to top weight and being a veteran of jumps racing.
When this horse was trained in Ireland by Gordon Elliott he used to be a very talented horse over hurdles and fences. He reached a peak rating of 146 and won eight times for Gordon, but between 2019 and 2020 his form took a huge dip and they decided to get rid of him, and he ended up being snapped up by Mark Campion who didn't get the best out of him, with his handicap mark plummeting from 143 to 115 which he managed to win off on his final start for Mark. This horse has clearly had his problems over the years, but after a 727 day absence and another trainer swap, this time for Brian Ellison, Dinons managed to win on stable debut over hurdles by an eased down ten lengths. To win off such a long time away from the track and to win eased down shows how good Brian Ellison is, and despite that race being in a much weaker grade than today's race, and he is over fences today, there's surely more to come from this horse who was rated much higher in the past.
Brian had a success story last year when acquiring Angler's Crag from David Pipe. That horse was winless when trained by Pipe, but Brian managed to win four races on the bounce and that saw his rating go from 106 to 126, which included a win in the £42k Eider Chase at Newcastle. If Brian can do anything similar with his newly acquired horse, then I think he is worth a shot in this better race now he is reverting back to fences.
