Friday was a dud day with all four selections running considerably below par.
There is some nice racing on Saturday, in particular at Haydock and Sandown.
Cairnzy's Tips
Classic 11/2 – Sandown 2.25
My first selection on Saturday is Classic for trainer Richard Hannon and jockey Pat Dobbs. Some of you may remember me tipping Classic up recently on the thread as an each-way shot, he didn't manage to win on that occasion, however, he managed to finish second by a neck and gained us some each-way profit.
Trainer Richard Hannon has always held Classic in high regard and he wasted no time in throwing him into the deep end in the Greenham Stakes last year. Although that race proved out of his reach, it was on unfavorable soft ground and he had excuses for underperforming on that occasion. Classic performs much better on a quicker surface, as evidenced by his victory in a seven-furlong handicap at this track last summer. During that race, he beat home Novus from the Gary Moore yard, Novus has shown significant improvement by winning and running creditably at group and listed level.
My selection wasn't seen to the best effect at this venue a couple of runs ago, the ground conditions again were not in his favor. Classic was also returning from a 268 day break and with two runs under the belt, he comes here in good nick. Despite not winning last time out, I was impressed with how Classic picked his way through the field from the rear. He can count himself unlucky in my opinion to go down by a neck, given the eventual winner was better positioned when making his challenge. Classic still looks a well handicapped horse and a repeat performance of his last run with a bit of luck in running should see him go close.
Golden Myrrh 11/8 – Beverley 3.25
Golden Myrrh let favourite backers down on her handicap debut at Nottingham in May. I thought she traveled well on handicap debut until the three pole then when asked to lay down a challenge she found very little. She then took a massive step forward next time out when winning at Wolverhampton.
There was a lot to like about the win at Wolverhampton, my selection never looked in trouble and was well on top at the finish to win by a length and a quarter. Golden Myrrh then made it two on the bounce in her most recent outing at Doncaster, a run that was even more impressive than the victory at Wolverhampton. She only won by a quarter of a length but the winning margin doesn't tell the whole story. She broke well, traveled strongly against the rail behind the pacesetter and went past with ease inside the final couple of furlongs. Jockey Rossa Ryan barely came off the bridle during that contest and it was pretty much a hands and heel job for him in the business end.
She's up 6lb for that success but is clearly a filly on the up and I don't think the rise will be enough to stop her from landing the hat trick. Silvestre De Sousa who is in great form ( landed a double at this track yesterday ) takes over from Rossa and he's a great replacement to get the job done for us on Saturday.
Rizzel's Tips
Desperate Hero – Sandown 1.50
I really do like the chances of the up-and-coming four-year-old sprinter, Desperate Hero. This gelding of Captain Gerrard has done nothing but improve this year, after ending last season on a high. He started off last year towards the bottom of the 70 ratings, and now finds himself over 100 rated and in with a great chance of landing Group 3 honours. I firmly believe that handicap sprinters have a much better chance of bridging the gap into Class 1 company than any other distance, and given the great level of form Desperate Hero has been showing, he looks more than capable of holding his own against better horses. The form reads better than most in this race, especially his win at Goodwood when he beat the next-time-out Epsom Dash winner, Dream Composer. Clarendon House was fourth that day and he has since gone over to Cork to land a Listed race. On his most recent start, Desperate Hero bolted up at Hamilton and that is a great indicator that the stiff finish at Sandown will be perfect for him, as he scooted 4L clear at Hamilton, which has one of the stiffest climbs in the UK. The rain which is going to turn the ground into soft, won't be an issue as he has proven himself on heavy ground.
In my opinion, only a couple of others should really be in contention for winning this race, and that would be Equality, who won this race last year and Live In The Dream. I think you can probably forgive Live In The Dream for his lacklustre performance last time out, as that was simply not a true showing on his ability. His run on seasonal reappearance confirmed he is still a very good horse, shown by producing an RPR of 116, which is just 4lbs below when he won the Nunthorpe. For whatever reason he didn't show his true colours at Haydock last time out, but I expect him to be short in the market, and I'm not 100% sure he will enjoy the stiff Sandown finish, as he is a very quick horse.
Moonstone Boy – Haydock 1.30
With Haydock expecting to get some rain on Saturday morning, and given how the ground can change at this track, I thought that Moonstone Boy was worth a chance. The favourite has a clear chance of winning this, hence why he is the price he is, but with the forecast rain, I'd have doubts that he'd want soft conditions. Whereas, Moonstone Boy has seen his best form come on turf which has soft in the description, especially the Thirsk race when he finished as runner-up to an Irish raider who has since won a competitive 20k Euro pot at the Curragh. Curious Rover was back in sixth in the Thirsk race, and that horse has close form tied in with the favourite, so it reads as good form. The form was also enhanced by the fourth-placed horse who went on to win on his next start. That second-placed effort by Moonstone Boy came off a handicap mark of 83. He has since dropped to a mark of 79 and gets the useful Mo Tabti in the saddle who takes off a further 5lbs, which makes him an attractive bet on Saturday.
Though the favourite has run well on good to soft in the past, he was withdrawn on soft ground (the Thirsk race which Moonstone Boy ran in), so if the rain does get bad, you'd like to think that his chances will be scuppered. Even if he does handle the conditions, he is carrying a big weight, and I also didn't like the way he carried his head at Epsom. His last run was in the Epsom 3yo Dash handicap, which saw them running at speeds of 46mph, and he still wasn't dropping his head, so back on a flatter track where they won't be running as quickly would be a concern if I was backing. I do think he is the worthy favourite and I don't think the others in the race can put it up to him, other than my horse, who is without a doubt on a great handicap mark with the claimer taking 5lbs off.
