Ascot 2.30 – Queen Anne Stakes (Group 1)
Royal Ascot kicks off with the Queen Anne Stakes, a Group 1 over the straight mile. It’s a competitive field, and cases can be made for at least five or six contenders.
Rosallion is the “talking horse” after winning here last year and finishing third in the Lockinge. Connections claimed he needed the run, but that doesn't add up—there were strong signs he was fully tuned up. The same goes for Notable Speech, with Charlie Appleby insisting the Lockinge wasn’t a prep, yet both were soundly beaten by Lead Artist.
I tipped Lead Artist last time at 16/1 and, while we won’t get that price again, he still looks underestimated. Based on his Lockinge win, he should be favourite. He showed both speed and stamina—headed late by Dancing Gemini, but surged back to win convincingly. Ascot’s stiffer finish could suit him even more.
Colin Keane rides for the first time, and if he mirrors Oisin’s tactical ride from Newbury—just off the pace—Lead Artist has a strong chance in today’s opener.
Selection: Lead Artist

Ascot 3.05 – Coventry Stakes (Group 2)
The Coventry Stakes is always a bit of a lottery, with unexposed two-year-olds over six furlongs. But after digging through the form, Gstaad looks the one to be on.
Aidan O'Brien has won this race multiple times with once-raced juveniles, and Ryan Moore siding with Gstaad is telling. He wasn’t the stable fancy on debut but beat his odds-on stablemate with authority, finishing strongly.
The form stacks up well—links to Lady Iman, a solid sprinter, and Power Blue, who chased home Aidan’s top juvenile Albert Einstein. A strong pace and stiff finish should suit Gstaad perfectly.
Selection: Gstaad
Ascot 3.40 – King Charles III Stakes (Group 1)
It was surprising to see Mgheera so weak in the market at Haydock, given her smart French win prior. Despite a slow start in the Group 2, she travelled strongly, quickened impressively when asked, and finished with real purpose.
The stiff Ascot 5f should be ideal—she thrives off a strong pace, and this will be run at a furious gallop. While this is her first Group 1, the gap in class isn’t huge in the sprinting ranks, and she looks more than capable of bridging it.
Selection: Mgheera
Ascot 4.20 – St James's Palace Stakes (Group 1)
On paper, this should be between the UK and Irish 2000 Guineas winners—but surprises can happen.
Field Of Gold is a short-priced favourite after a dominant Irish 2000 Guineas win under Colin Keane, who called him the best horse he’s ever ridden. He was unlucky in the UK Guineas, where a poor ride cost him—leading to Kieran Shoemark’s exit from the Gosden yard. With a clean run, he’s the clear standout.
Selection: No bet
Ascot 5.00 – Ascot Stakes (Heritage Handicap)
Manxman got the better of my pick Mr Professor, last time at Goodwood, and after closely analysing that run, I think today’s race suits him perfectly.
He loved the strong pace over 2m and was just hitting top gear late. The longer trip here will play to his strengths—he was finishing best of all in last year’s Cesarewitch when narrowly beaten by Alphonse Le Grande, who reopposes today.
In a big field where luck in running is key, Manxman looks a standout each-way bet.
Selection: Manxman
Ascot 5.35 – Wolferton Stakes (Listed Race)
Surprised to see James Doyle choose Haatem over three Wathnan runners—he has plenty to prove over this trip. For me, King’s Gambit was the clear pick.
I tipped him last time at Newbury over 12f, where he underperformed—possibly due to the yard’s quiet spell and the blinkers, which are now off. He was too keen, so the drop in trip and removal of headgear should help him settle.
Selection: King's Gambit
Ascot 6.10 – Copper Horse Stakes (Handicap)
Not many look well handicapped here, but two stand out: Caballo De Mar and My Mate Mozzie.
I’ve been a long-time fan of Caballo De Mar—he’s in great form, with a Chester Cup second and a win at Haydock since. He’s clearly thriving.
The only slight worry is the drop to 14f off a higher mark, but he’s shown enough speed and class to handle it. A stiff track and strong pace should bring his stamina into play.
Selecton: Caballo De Mar
