Chillingham placed at 9/1 yesterday to gain some minor place money, but besides that, I was hit for six on Wednesday as my other two selections failed to land a blow.
I mentioned last night that backing odds on shots can come back and bite you and that was the case on Wednesday with Friendly Soul. If I'm honest, I don't think she was given a great ride by Kieran Shoemark. The horse pulled for her head and ran green from the start but she won last time by going forward, so I've no idea why he held her back in this instance.
I missed the 3:15 race in which Montassib ran in, so I'm unable to comment on the run. He finished sixth on the day, so I'm assuming he ran to some sort of level without really getting involved.
Kassaya 7/4 – Salisbury 3:00
I don't have a lot to go by in terms of form in this race as most of the field are making their first appearance, with that said, those with experience don't really set an amazing standard and this could very much go to a newcomer.
Kassaya is the horse that I decided to go with here. She went for 1,000,000 guineas as a foal and is related to several high-class types, none more so than Chaldean who went on to land the 2000 Guineas.
Chaldean debuted over 6f before stepping up to her optimum trips of 7f and a mile. The thing that caught my eye with Kassaya is the fact Andrew Balding is throwing her in on debut over the bare 5f. You'd have to assume she was showing some decent speed at home to be starting her career over the minimum trip.
The Eve Johnson youngsters are always worth a look in these types of contests and Pont Neuf is one of those with race experience having won on debut at Kempton over this same distance. Pont Neuf carries a penalty for that success and that was enough to put me off.
Pawapuri 11/4 – Salisbury 2:30
Before I get started on Pawapuri, If The Goat wins this race I'll be properly annoyed, I tipped him up last time and he let me down. I mentioned I wouldn't be laying him again going forward. Watch him bolt up by 20 lengths now that I've mentioned it…
Anyway! Enough blabbering and onto my selection for this race.
Pawapuri looks a good bet in this contest and it's worth noting that trainer Nicky Henderson does well with his horses who transition from the jumps to the flat.
It’s been a while since Pawapuri has raced on the flat having been campaigned over hurdles for trainer Nicky Henderson since changing hands from William Haggas in February of last year. Pawapuri has some decent form on the flat having won twice in only 5 starts. Her victory over 1m3f at Kempton when trained by William Haggas was the run that stood out for me.
She had her sights lowered when landing a maiden in good style at Wincanton in November. She followed up the Wincanton success with a victory at Haydock in a listed hurdle race. Pawapuri has form on soft ground so the forecast ground conditions at York will be no hindrance and she comes here race fit with a recent winter campaign under her belt.
Infinite Cosmos 13/2 – York 3:15
This looks like an absolute cracker on paper!
I was tempted by Free Wind at first, she is the “sexy” horse in the race given she has four group-race wins in the locker and a fine record of running well first time up.
In the end, I opted against her, she has a very up-and-down record and at the age of 6, she could find herself vulnerable to one of the upcoming youngsters.
I went in search of a bit of value and finally landed on Infinite Cosmos, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and will be ridden by Ryan Moore.
Sir Michael Stoute recently got his season off to a flyer at Chester, with Never So Brave and Passenger ( tipped up on the thread ) winning impressively on the day.
This daughter of Sea The Stars is still lightly raced and tomorrow's outing will represent only her fifth career start in her third season in training. She was sent off 15/8 favorite for the Musidora at this meeting last year and ran a respectful third. She was only beaten by over four lengths to the Gosden-trained Soul Sister. Soul Sister followed up the York success when landing the Betfred Oaks ahead of Aiden O'Briens Savethelastdance, so the form looks quite strong.
My selection was then off the track for 126 days before running at Yarmouth in September of last year. She ran well behind Sapphire Seas, who reopposes here but that one had race fitness on her side that day which would have aided her cause.
A career-best is probably needed here to win this race but I'm more than happy to have a few quid on her at the current price.
