For those interested in dogs, there’s no shortage of action on Thursday, with a variety of cards to get stuck into, including a couple of evening meetings at Monmore and Newcastle.
Today’s greyhound tips
Tonight’s cards at Monmore and Newcastle have caught the eye from a betting point of view. See below for details on three potential bets, odds allowing.
Tip 1: Westforth Ceejay (take odds of 6/4+)
Race #3 Newcastle @ 19:11
We’ll start the evening at Newcastle, where ahead of the third race, I very much like the look of Westforth Ceejay’s chances.
Winning 28.57% of his races at Newcastle, this lad knows how to do the business at this venue and there’s plenty to like about him in this field.
Don’t be put off by his lack of Grade 1 wins. There’s not a single Grade 1 winner in this field and with Trap 5 vacant, he's got plenty of room to work with, leaving him free to dominate what is far from the strongest field given the level.
I make him a decent favourite here, and if odds of 6/4 or bigger are available when this is priced up, I’ll definitely be getting involved.
Tip 2: Newinn Trigger (take odds of 11/4+)
Race #7 Monmore @ 19:56
Moving on to Monmore, where ahead of the 19:56, Trap 4 looks worthy of support at what should be a decent price.
Winning two of his previous six A3 runs at Monmore, this dog has a decent strike rate from Trap 4 at the track too, while he’s competed well in a couple of A2 races of late, showing that he’s clearly a big player at this level.
The trainer also has the dogs in Traps 1 and 6, but neither have started well in recent runs. Clearly an early pace dog, Newin Trigger, who had his kennel mate in six behind him when winning three runs back, can beat that pair to the corner and if he does, he ought to take some beating here.
At the very least, he’s the value play at what is likely to be a bigger price than you’ll get on the striped jacket.
Tip 3: Away Jazz (take odds of 9/4+)
Race #9 Monmore @ 20:31
There’s a few in this race that warrant respect, including the dog out widest of all, who has been running very well of late and who will certainly be aided by the lack of an opponent in Trap 5.
However, Away Jazz is hard to ignore now dropping back into graded company. There was nothing wrong with his effort when finishing second in an Open Race five days ago, while her A1 record is very impressive. He’s won seven out of 10 at Monmore (in A1 races).
A slightly inferior kennel mate next to him in Trap 3 should help, while I think he’s shown more than enough to suggest that he can beat Trap 1 to the first bend. If he does that, then he ought to be bang there at the death.
Acca bet & other markets to explore
If multiple bets are your sort of thing (and the odds recommended above are available), then an accumulator containing the three dogs will pay just over 26/1 (using odds of 6/4, 11/4 and 9/4).
