usmastersgolf

IT was a pretty good weekend with one winner, a second and a fifth from tournaments in the States and South Africa.

My best bet was Thomas Aiken who won the Africa Open. I advised him at 11-1 and suggested a 2.5pts ew stake. I thought I was on for 131-1 double when Dustin Johnson led the Northern Trust Open overnight but he ended up losing out to a charging Bubba Watson. I advised Johnson 2.5pts ew at 12-1.

My fifth-placed man in South Africa was Darren Fichardt who I tipped at 25-1 1pt ew.

It's been a good year so far and it's great to have some profit in the bag ahead of the US Masters.

This week it's the Accenture Matchplay and although I don’t normally bet on matchplay tournaments I’ll give it a go and low stakes are advised.

The 64 players are split into four different sections and the hardest one seems to be the Ben Hogan section which includes Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and Charl Schwartzel to name but four.

So picking someone to come through that one could be quite difficult but I fancy Rory to do the business. If he and Poulter meet in the quarter-finals that could be quite a tasty match.

In the Bobby Jones section George Coetzee is in really hot form after finishing in the top five on his last three appearances. Louis Oosthuizen hasn’t reached the fourth round of this tournament in four tries and missed the cut at Riviera earlier this year but did win in South Africa in January and has the game for a good run.

I really like the look of Jason Day. This season, apart from last week, he’s had four top-10 finishes, including winning the ISPS Handa World of Golf in November. He just never seems to give up and is a big-game player so he is my tip.

In the Gary Player section we have Justin Rose, Matt Kuchar (defending champion), Jordan Spieth and Luke Donald among the starters. It’s going to be between Rose and Kuchar to come through. I’m going for Kuchar who has reached the quarter-finals in the last three years and of course won it last year.

Dustin Johnston tees off in the Sam Snead section alongside the likes of Bubba Watson, winner last week, Graeme McDowell and Keegan Bradley. I am a Dustin Johnson fan and back him all the time but have a sneaky feeling for McDowell who loves matchplay format so we’ll go for him.

Two names I’ve not mentioned are Hunter Mahan and Billy Horschel. Although Mahan isn’t firing on all cylinders at the moment he has a record of 11-1 in the last two years of this tournament. He won in 2012 and was runner-up to Kuchar last year so could just sneak in there.

Horschel won once on the PGA Tour last year but hasn’t done anything significant so far this year. He was sixth in the Fedex Cup last year so is better than his recent form might suggest and his market price looks quite tempting.

Poulter and Rickie Fowler get the action under way at 2.25pm on Wednesday.

15pt staking plan

Rory McIlroy (2pts ew) 14-1 Stan James

Jason Day (2pts ew) 20-1 Ladbrokes

Matt Kuchar (1.5pt ew) 28-1 William Hill

Graeme McDowell (1pt ew) 40-1 McBookie, BetVictor

Hunter Mahan (1pt ew) 25-1 Paddy Power

Billy Horschel (1pt ew) 80-1 Betfred

Probably the worst tournament of the year to try and pick an outright winner for.

    Gone with four(small stakes)

Dufner, Coetzee, Poulter and Zach Johnson.

Each Way : how many places is that and does it differ/vary depending on which tournament is being contested? Clearly my in-depth wealth of golfing knowledge is up there on a ‘Par’ with any glue factory tip list written by the great Johnb himself! Thanks, Jake Hicks

Jake, on strokeplay it’s usually five depending on the bookie but can be six or even seven. For matchplay it will be to reach the semi-finals.

Agree a lot with Ace Venturer as I’m on Jason Day, Sergio Garcia, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan & Rory McIllroy.
Outsiders Gary Woodland & Peter Hanson.

Trying a couple of small stakes lucky 15’s for interest.

Any good websites to find golf form like recent events and historical placings. Usually need to wait on Racing Post coming out.
