Sonego to beat Goffin @ 11/10
The first of the Winston-Salem semi-finals is mighty tough to call. Both Lorenzo Sonego and David Goffin come into this match seeing the ball well, and will be eyeing up the opportunity to bag a title this week. For Sonego, he’s played just the two matches and not dropped a set yet. As the No. 10 seed he received a bye into the Round of 32, before getting a walkover into the quarter-finals. There, he beat No. 15 seed Pavel Kotov comfortably, winning 6-3, 7-5. For Goffin, he’s had to play a few more matches, but it’s been all plain-sailing to the Belgian after a tough opening round. He began against Jaume Munar and went the distance, but since then has dropped no more than six games per match as he’s seen off three seeded players in Luciano Darderi, Arthur Rinderknech and Rinky Hijikata. We give the edge to Sonego, just because if you zoom out a bit, he’s been playing better tennis and beating stronger opponents recently. The Italian has a little more match fitness too, and with just two played in Winston-Salem, should be fresh enough to see off the veteran.
Michelsen to beat Carreno Busta @ 8/11
In the Winston-Salem Open’s second semi-final, we’re confident that America’s Alex Michelsen will pull through. The 19-year-old just keeps going from strength to strength on the ATP Tour, and is into the business end of yet another tournament. Michelsen has proved before that semi-finals don’t bother him.
