Football Bet of the Day 23rd august

Firstly, I’d like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year. Following a pretty dismal end to the year, the opening Football Bet of the Day of 2025 sees me head to the English League Two, and I’ve highlighted a goals-based selection in one of the fixtures.

⚽️ Port Vale vs Cheltenham Town

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 League Two

⏰ Wednesday 1 January, 15:00

Promotion-chasing Port Vale will look to put an end to their seven-match winless run as they welcome mid-table Cheltenham to Vale Park on New Year’s Day in a fixture that appeals to me for goals.

Darren Moore’s hosts have scored 27 goals across their opening 23 League Two clashes this campaign, with 13 (48%) of them coming across their 10 home matches.

The Valiants have found the back of the net in seven of their past nine league outings on home soil – striking on multiple occasions in four (44%) of them – and will look to trouble a Cheltenham defence that has kept a solitary clean sheet away from home this season against Carlisle United (23rd), shipping multiple goals in 7/10 (70%) of them.

Despite their lowly position, Michael Flynn’s visitors are the joint fourth-highest scorers in the English fourth tier, slamming in 34 goals across their opening 23 matches, with 15 (44%) of them coming across their 10 road trips.

The Robins have found the back of the net in all bar two of their league outings, including in all 10 (100%) on their travels – notching on multiple occasions in four of their past five road trips – and will look to find the target once again against a Port Vale defence that has kept just one clean sheet across their past seven league outings in front of their supporters, with that coming against second-from-bottom Carlisle United.

Bet of the Day

Cheltenham’s opening 23 fixtures in League Two this season have averaged 3.04 goals per game, with Both Teams to Score banking in a league-high 17 (74%) of them.

Those numbers rise even further when on their travels, with their opening 10 road trips averaging 3.30 goals per game, with Both Teams to Score paying out in nine (90%) of them – and given the same has landed in six of Port Vale’s past nine league outings on home soil – I’m happy to have a play on both of these sides finding the target.

What’s more, 14 of the past 17 meetings between these two sides have produced goals at both ends – including each of the past eight at Vale Park – and I’m hoping that trend continues at Stoke-on-Trent on New Year’s Day.

  • Both Teams to Score
  • Pays 10/11 (Bet365/Betway/William Hill)
