Saturday's EFL programme provides another opportunity to assess the Championship and League One, with several fixtures standing out when recent results are compared with underlying attacking and defensive performances.
The latest figures highlight some interesting contrasts between teams producing consistent attacking numbers and opponents who have struggled to keep chances to a minimum. Home and away records are particularly important this weekend, with several sides showing markedly different performances depending on where they play.
After reviewing the latest xG, xGA, scoring trends and match statistics, I've narrowed the weekend's card down to three selections. Each is supported by the relevant venue records, with the focus firmly on finding the most likely winners rather than chasing bigger prices.
Here are my three best EFL bets for Saturday.
Cardiff City v Birmingham City
Cardiff City welcome Birmingham City to the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday afternoon, with kick-off at 15:00. Both sides have demonstrated considerable attacking potential during the opening months of the Championship campaign, making this an intriguing contest between two teams capable of creating opportunities and finding the net.
Cardiff's home performances provide a particularly strong starting point. Both teams have scored in all five of their Championship fixtures in South Wales, with the hosts recording results of 1-1, 2-2, 1-1, 3-1 and 5-1. That consistency is encouraging, particularly as Cardiff have generated an average of 2.86 xG at home, suggesting their attacking output is supported by the quality of chances created.
Birmingham's away record strengthens the argument. Both teams have scored in three of their five league trips, with the visitors averaging 2.12 xG. Their away results include victories by 2-1 and a defeat by the same scoreline, demonstrating that they can contribute offensively even when opponents create problems at the other end.
The additional goals restriction is important when assessing the selection. Cardiff have produced both teams to score and fewer than six goals in four of five home matches, while Birmingham have met those conditions in three of five away fixtures.
That gives the combination a 70% historical success rate across 10 relevant matches, compared with the 57.9% break-even probability at 8/11.
Cardiff's attacking consistency and Birmingham's ability to score away from home make this our strongest selection of the three, with the under six goals condition supported by the previous results.
- Best bet: Both teams to score & Under 6 goals at 8/11 with Bet365.
Blackpool v Mansfield Town
Bloomfield Road stages an interesting League One encounter on Saturday afternoon as Blackpool host Mansfield Town. The visitors arrive with an away record that has regularly produced goals, while Blackpool's home performances suggest there should be opportunities at both ends.
Mansfield's record on their travels is the strongest argument for expecting another entertaining contest. Four of their five away league matches have produced Over 2.5 goals, an 80% success rate that makes this one of the more encouraging goals selections on the League One card.
Their underlying numbers also suggest opponents have been able to create opportunities. Mansfield average 1.40 xGA away from home, while generating 1.20 xG themselves. Although those figures do not guarantee a high-scoring match, they point towards a side that can contribute offensively without consistently preventing chances at the other end.
Blackpool have recorded over 2.5 goals in three of their five home fixtures, including encounters against Bromley and Plymouth Argyle. Their average of 1.98 xG at Bloomfield Road demonstrates that they have created enough quality opportunities to threaten opposing defences regularly.
The hosts' defensive numbers are equally relevant. An average home xGA of 1.55 suggests visiting teams have also been afforded opportunities, giving Mansfield encouragement despite their comparatively modest attacking figures.
Across the 10 relevant home and away fixtures, seven have produced at least three goals. That represents a 70% historical hit rate, comfortably above the 57.9% break-even probability at the available price.
Blackpool's stronger attacking output, combined with Mansfield's tendency to feature in higher-scoring away matches, makes over 2.5 goals an attractive selection. The evidence comes from both sides rather than relying on one team's performances alone.
- Best bet: Over 2.5 goals at 8/11 at 10Bet
Cambridge United v Plymouth Argyle
Cambridge United return to the Cledara Abbey Stadium on Saturday afternoon for their League One meeting with Plymouth Argyle. The hosts have been involved in a succession of open encounters in front of their own supporters, while Plymouth's away performances offer encouragement for another match featuring goals at both ends.
Cambridge's home record is the standout statistic. Both teams have scored in five of their six league fixtures at the Abbey Stadium, an 83.3% success rate. Their latest 2-2 draw against Wycombe Wanderers continued that pattern, illustrating how frequently Cambridge's matches have provided opportunities for both attacking units.
Plymouth's away record is less convincing but still offers support. Both teams have scored in three of their six league trips, although their recent 3-0 defeat at Stevenage and 2-0 victory over Leyton Orient demonstrate why the visitors' attacking contribution remains the main concern.
The corner statistics make the additional condition particularly interesting. Cambridge's home matches have averaged 13.2 total corners, while Plymouth's away fixtures have produced an average of 10.8.
More importantly, every match in the relevant twelve-game sample has featured at least seven corners. Consequently, adding over six match corners would not have eliminated any of the eight historical both-teams-to-score winners.
The combination has therefore landed in eight of twelve relevant fixtures, a 66.7% hit rate, compared with the 57.9% break-even probability at 8/11.
Cambridge's consistent home scoring patterns provide the foundation for this selection, while the corner requirement has been comfortably supported by both teams' previous matches.
- Best bet: Both teams to score & Over 6 match corners at 8/11 with Bet365.
