1. William Hill

William Hill is nothing short of an institution within British horse racing and sports betting. On the scene for many years, this brand truly remains one of the best horse racing betting sites in the world.

The current welcome offer at William Hill is deposit, bet and get £60. The bonus amount comes in the way of free bets.

William Hill pros & cons

In all, we recommend William Hill highly. As has been the case for decades, the William Hill horse racing betting platform is one of the strongest around. Make sure you check on their promotions section regularly to see what’s available.

Pros

  • Good promotional offers
  • Strong range of payment options

Cons

  • Older site layout
  • Not always best odds

2. Bet365

One of the most recognisable names on the market these days is bet365. A great racing specialist, their current offer is bet £10, get £30 in free bets.

Bet365 pros & cons

Bet365 is a true industry giant. Given their horse racing and sports offering, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better platform in the UK.

Pros

  • Consistent free bet offers
  • Massive selection of bets

Cons

  • App sometimes crashes
  • High deposit amount for PayPal

3. Betfred

Betfred is now the home of the Classics having chosen to sponsor all five big races in Britain from the Guineas to the St Leger.

The current welcome deal for new players is bet £10, get £50 which is a very fair deal indeed.

Betfred pros & cons

Betfred very obviously has horse racing at its heart and we respect that. The Betfred promo code is useful for newcomers to get on and see what the brand has to offer.

Pros

  • Good range of specials
  • Comprehensive sports section

Cons

  • Not the strongest odds
  • Lack of Esports

4. Star Sports Bet

Star Sports has become known as the bookie who won’t shy away from larger bets. That has made them very popular, as well as their welcome offer of get 50% back as a free bet which we like.

Star Sports Bet pros & cons

Have a look at the Star Sports bet app. It’s a good platform to use and especially good for big-betting horse racing punters, though another 30 sports and events are offered too.

Pros

  • Cashback offered
  • Big bets accepted

Cons

  • Poor payment options
  • No live streaming

5. Boylesports

Boylesports, an Irish firm with a firm grip on the British market, is well known to most punters already. Keen to attract even more custom in the future, their current welcome offer is bet £10, get £40 in bonuses.

Boylesports pros & cons

In our Boylesports review, we found that this is another of the icons of the British high street. Their online offering is also very good, especially for horse racing punters and we can’t put you off trying them out.

Pros

  • Good mobile app
  • Excellent customer service

Cons

  • Loyalty scheme only in shops
  • Minimum withdrawal is higher than deposit

6. BetVictor

BetVictor is another of those canonical British bookmaking names. Their presence has been felt on the market for quite some time. The current BetVictor sign up offer allows customers to get £30 in free bets plus 30 free spins when they bet £10.

BetVictor pros & cons

BetVictor, formerly Victor Chandler, has that age-old comfort we like. The Chandler family’s interest in racing means that we are happy that they have punters of this sport at heart.

Pros

  • Fast withdrawals
  • Good betting app

Cons

  • Live streaming – but racing only
  • Not always best odds

7. Ladbrokes

One of the oldest bookmakers anywhere in the world is Ladbrokes and, even in the digital age, they are still going strong. The current Ladbrokes promo code gets punters a £20 bonus when you bet £5, which is a low amount but also very cheap to get which we like.

Ladbrokes pros & cons

Nobody in the world of horse racing and sports betting does not know Ladbrokes. It’s that history that keeps us confident in their ability and they have shown us time and again that they are a brand to trust.

Pros

  • Trusted name
  • Very big racing and sports platform

Cons

  • Customer support is not 24/7
  • Odds not always up to scratch

8. Coral

Along with Ladbrokes and William Hill, Coral are one of the oldest high street bookmakers around who have moved seamlessly into online betting. Their new customer deal is cheap to get; bet £5 and get a £20 welcome bonus. We like this as it doesn’t promise too much but doesn’t cost a major opening bet.

Coral pros & cons

Coral is owned by the same company as Ladbrokes, and as such their odds are the same. That said, they in their own right are an old and trusted brand and they are as secure as ever.

Pros

  • Good for racing and Esports
  • Trusted name

Cons

  • No VIP program for regulars
  • Same odds as Ladbrokes

9. Unibet

Unibet is well known for its sponsorship of various sports teams and horse races. Their reputation is increasing all the time and rightly so. The current welcome deal at Unibet allows for money back up to £40 if your first bet loses. This is a very fair way of offering a bonus.

Unibet pros & cons

Unibet have made great strides in the past few years, but they are still not as comprehensive a platform as bet365 or William Hill. Their bonus is very fair though and is one of the better ones on the market.

Pros

  • Good terms for promotions
  • Big sports betting platform

Cons

  • Not always best odds
  • Live betting a little light on stats

10. Grosvenor

One of the new horse racing betting sites on the market is Grosvenor, a long-established bricks and mortar casino brand. They have started well in this business and as a well-known name, are bound to attract plenty of interest.

The welcome offer at Grosvenor for sports customers is double the odds on your first bet. No money is given out as such, but you can take 10/1 about a 5/1 shot and that’s pretty smart.

Grosvenor pros & cons

Grosvenor Casinos are well know, but you may not have been aware that they now offer online sports betting. They do, and they are pretty good at it but there is definitely more work to be done yet.

Pros

  • Well known global brand
  • Great for casino lovers

Cons

  • New to sports betting world
  • Not the best odds

The Cheltenham Gold Cup

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the highlight of the prestigious Cheltenham Festival. The feature race of the four-day meeting was the fourth race on the final day and in 2025 took place at 15:30 on Friday 14th March 2025.

The Group One graded race is the most prestigious National Hunt race in the United Kingdom and is open to horses aged five years and over. The race is run on the New Course at Prestbury Park’s Cheltenham Racecourse over a distance of three miles, two furlongs and 70 yards. In all, there are 22 fences to be jumped. The race is often referred to as the Blue Riband of jump racing.

The 2025 edition was won by Inothewayurthinkin, trained by Gavin Cromwell and ridden by Mark Walsh, beating 2023 and 2024 champion Galopin Des Champs into second place.

Grand National

First run in 1839, the Grand National is a National Hunt horse race held annually in early April at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, England. The race is a handicap steeplechase over an official distance of around four miles and two and a half furlongs. During the race, the horses must clear 30 fences over two laps.

The English Grand National normally takes place annually on the first Saturday in April. The race is said to be the ultimate test of horse and rider. With a prize fund of £1 million, this is the most valuable jump race in Europe. Featuring much tougher hurdles than other National Hunt tracks, the course over which the race is run features world famous fences such as Becher’s Brook, The Chair and the Canal Turn.

The 2025 Grand National was won by Nick Rockett, trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Patrick Mullins, marking a historic 1-2-3 finish for the Mullins stable.

Royal Ascot

Royal Ascot is a traditional four-day summertime horse racing meeting typically held in front of the British monarchy. The event is held at the Berkshire course in June and includes a number of Group listed races which are all great for Royal Ascot betting.

The festival lasts for five days and on each day at 14:00 there is a royal procession. At this point the King is driven down the straight mile in a horse-drawn Royal Landau carriage while the National Anthem is played and the Royal Standard flag is raised. This tradition was started by King George IV in 1825 and it has been followed ever since.

On each of the first four days of Royal Ascot there are seven races with seven more on the Saturday, which is the final day of the meeting. In total, there are eight Group One listed races, including the Ascot Gold Cup. There are also a whole host of Group Twos and Threes as well, making up eighteen Group races. In total, around 500 of the world’s finest racehorses will take part in what is Britain’s most valuable race meeting and an event which is broadcast all around the world.

The Derby

The Derby is traditionally held on a Saturday in early June at 16:30 (BST) with the Oaks starting 24 hours earlier. The races are both run at Epsom Downs over a distance of around a mile and a half. As a course, Epsom is a left-handed, U-shaped track famous for its tight bends. The first four furlongs of the Derby course are uphill, and stamina is always key.

The Epsom Derby is the biggest flat race of the year and one of the five classics of British racing. The other four being The Oaks, the 2,000 Guineas, 1,000 Guineas and the St Leger.

How to choose your horse racing betting site

On this page, I will introduce you to our top horse racing betting sites. But if you are wondering, how we rank them and come to these conclusions, then I can elaborate. When we rank a bookie, we look into the different types of horse racing events and festivals that take place throughout the year in the UK and judge a bookie by its approach to them all.

We also share some of the best horse racing bookmakers’ promotions and bonuses that are available. This way we are connecting you to sites that offer the best value, as well as providing responsible gambling tools to keep the players safe and providing good customer service all in a user friendly way.

Competitive welcome offer

Whenever you sign up to a new betting account, you will want to get your bank roll off to the best possible start. The best way to achieve this is to sign up to a bookmaker that offers the best welcome bonus. This will likely be a free bets offer but will vary in value.

For instance, William Hill offers £60 worth of bonuses in exchange for an opening £10 bet. £40 of this is made up of four £10 free bets, with a further £20 awarded as a William Hill Vegas bonus to be used on selected games. Your £10 free bets, and indeed the qualifying wager, can all be used on horse racing.

Gentleman Jim is another good horse racing betting site, but they currently don’t have a sign up offer.

Competitive odds value and best odds guarantee

When betting on the horses, or any sport for that matter, you will want to back your selections against the best possible odds. There are a number of bookies that offer best odds guaranteed promotions, one of which is BetVictor.

With this promotion, if the starting price (SP) of your winning selection is larger than the price you took when placing your bet, the bookmaker will pay you at the bigger price. This is often abbreviated to BOG.

BetVictor also has a Run For Your Money promotion where they will refund all losing bets on British and Irish racing when horses refuse or whip around at the start, fail to come out, or lose all chance at the stalls.

Horse racing betting market variety

There are lots of different and interesting ways to bet on the horses. From simply backing a horse to win, either straight or each way, to laying down forecasts and tricasts. You can also place Tote bets and placepots as well as combination bets and accumulators.

When it comes to horse racing betting, there’s a lot going on at Betfred. If you bet on the horses, you are able to collect one Rewards4Racing point for every £1 staked when you link your Rewards4Racing account to your Betfred account.

On top of all this, Betfred also offers five times the odds on a Lucky 63, four times the odds on a Lucky 31, and three times the odds on Lucky 15s. This bookie also offers a 10% bonus on tricasts, extra and super extra place races, 10% bonus on Lucky 15s and Yankees, 20% Lucky 31s and Canadians, plus a 25% bonus on a Lucky 63 and a Heinz.

Other horse racing promotions at Betfred include a 10% Winnings Boost and a free bet refund if your horse comes 2nd or 3rd in selected races.

Proposed ante-post options

An ante-post bet is a wager that has been placed before the start of the event, in this case a horse race. Ante-post means ‘before the post’, and in horse racing refers to the starting post. An ante-post bet is usually placed well in advance of the race’s start date. These bets are normally made on the most notable horse races such as the Grand National or the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

On the one hand, bettors are able to get larger odds than they might find on the day of the actual race as the closer it gets to a race starting, the lower the odds are likely to be. However, one of the major risks attached to ante-post betting is that a non-runner will normally result in your bet losing.

However, there are plenty of bookies that run an offer where your stake will be returned if your horse doesn’t run. This is referred to as non-runner no bet, and it is a key feature in the ante-post horse racing betting markets. For example, Coral offers non-runner no bet on all championship races at the Cheltenham Festival. Coral also runs a Horse Racing Club, where you can get closer to the action, while it also has a My Stable tool where you can track your favourite horses.

Security & trust

It is always important that you only ever play at a site that has a trustworthy reputation and is fully licensed. Ideally, these would be licenses awarded by the United Kingdom Gambling Commission or the Malta Gaming Authority.

To keep your money and sensitive data safe, choose a site such as bet365 that uses TLS (Transport Layer Security) to encrypt data going to and from the site. This includes your personal details and any payment information.

Banking options

Another crucial factor when deciding on your perfect horse racing betting site is the range of banking methods provided for you to make your deposits and withdrawals. The most common of these is the debit card, which is traditionally provided by the two main banking corporations, Visa and Mastercard.

For the most part, welcome bonus offers can only be triggered by using debit cards, but there are some bookies that will let you make your qualifying deposit using other methods such as Apple Pay. That is certainly the case with Betano. Other banking options can include e-wallets such as PayPal, Skrill, or Neteller. A lot of betting platforms also offer Instant Bank Transfer and Paysafecard.

Web and app user experience

Finally, it is favourable to opt for a site that has a good mobile betting app. Whether you favour an iOS device or prefer to use an Android phone, most online bookmakers will offer an app for both systems. This is true of Ladbrokes.

It isn’t completely vital as most sites will fully convert to mobile mode when used through a mobile browser anyway. It is just that most bettors prefer to use an app. Also, these days most sites, especially the newest ones, have been designed with mobile in mind.

Horse racing betting strategies and guide

In order to beat the bookies when you bet on the horses, it is always a good idea to employ the best horse racing betting strategies. Take every variable into consideration. Conditions, stable, form, jockey all need to be factored in.

For example, plenty of horses can handle a variety of different ground conditions but there are also many horses that won’t be able to perform on extreme ground, such as heavy and firm. In these extreme conditions, you should oppose favourites that have previously proven that they can’t perform at their best when the going’s tough.

Because the world of online bookmakers is very competitive and there are so many betting sites, they will compete with each other with betting promotions. For the biggest races, many bookies will offer a higher amount of paid places. Look for the bookmaker that is paying more places if you want to make an each-way bet.

Following certain jockeys, in-form horses, hot yards and the best performing trainers is also wise.

Different types of horse racing bets

Outright winner

With an outright bet, punters are betting on the winning horse, as in the horse that they believe will finish first in a nominated race. All punters are required to do is add their pick, or picks, to their betting slip before adding the amount that they wish to wager and placing the bet. It is very straightforward and will only payout if your horse wins.

Each-way

One way to add a little extra insurance to your bet is to make your wager an each-way one. Once again, simply make your selection for the race and choose two equal stakes. The first of these is for the win, and the second is for the place. The point of the two separate bets is that an each-way bet is two bets in one. Both parts of the bet will payout if your selection wins, but if your horse finishes in the top few places that a bookie has agreed to payout for, you’ll get paid on the place part of the bet instead.

Forecast bet

Forecast bets work by picking two horses and nominating them to finish first and second in a horse race. As long as both of your horses finish in the order that you predicted, then the bet has been proved successful, and you will receive a payout. These payouts are calculated, not by the bookies themselves, but by an industry organisation who use the odds of the horses involved to generate a figure which is then paid to the pound.

Tricast bet

Tricast bets are similar to forecasts but instead you need to correctly predict the first three horses to come home in a race. Again, the order of the three horses is critical, as you can’t just nominate the three horses to finish in any order unless you pay for it with an any-way tricast. That particular combination bet requires six stakes, one for each potential outcome. Sticking with a straight tricast, assuming you correctly guessed the three horses in the right order, your returns are paid to the pound.

Types of Horse Racing bonuses you can get

Welcome offers

Welcome deals are at the core of horse racing betting offers.

New customers often get free bets, such as with the William Hill sign up offer (£60 bonus after deposit). The deals usually include punters depositing and/or betting a minimum initial amount, often £5 or £10, before receiving free bets.

Bonuses are usually given as free bets rather than in cash and always come with terms and conditions. We recommend getting a deal that isn’t too expensive to claim and with no wagering requirements.

Bet boosts

Bet boosts involve punters getting inflated odds on a selection of their choice.

When available, a Bet Boost can lift a horse’s odds from 3/1 to 5/1, or something similar. Some firms offer this to everyone, while others keep it for new and eligible customers.

If you get the opportunity for a Bet Boost, we recommend that you don’t jump in and save it for a horse you genuinely fancy to win.

Extra places

This is one of the most popular horse racing betting offers around. Both established and new horse racing betting sites offer this.

Extra places is for each-way punters. Instead of backing a horse to finish in the top 3, you can extend this to 3, 5 or even 6 places.

Our main tip is not to use it up on a major handicap, such as the Ebor as extra places are usually given anyway. Claim your extra places purposely when you think you may need them.

How do we rate a horse racing betting site on MrFixitsTips?

We’re looking at several things.

Security & trust 🔒

High on the list is legitimacy. In other words, we only recommend tried and trusted betting sites that verify. All of the betting sites that we recommend have proven themselves in terms of legitimacy, while they all hold official licenses from recognised gambling bodies such as the UK Gambling Commission.

Promotions 🎁

As we’re talking about Horse Racing betting sites, another factor that we take into consideration is specific Horse Racing features or offers. Betting sites that offer pleasing or unique Horse Racing features/offfers will typically rank highly.

Horse racing market 🏇

Since we’re talking about Horse Racing betting sites on this occasion, we’re interested in the Horse Racing betting markets that are being offered. Is there plenty of variety? Is a Horse Racing betting site offering any unique markets? These are the sort of questions we’re asking and answering.

Horse racing odds *️⃣

Similarly, does the Horse Racing betting site in question offer competitive Horse Racing odds? Do they ever offer the best industry price? One of the reasons why we might rank a Horse Racing betting site highly is if they consistently offer competitive odds.

Horse racing betting features 🗝️

We want to know what betting features are available and whether any of them, dedicated to Horse Racing in this article, are also available. Some bookmakers have exclusives on certain sports and that’s always a good thing to know.

Design, navigation & mobile app 📱

One of the first things that we take into consideration when rating betting sites is user interface. Horse Racing betting sites need to be user friendly, otherwise let’s face it, nobody is going to want to use them.

We rank betting sites highly if they deliver a user interface that makes the experience of a bettor a simple and enjoyable one. We want to see a betting site that is easy to use, looks good and is highly functional without errors.

Payment methods 💳

Last but definitely not least, payment options merit lots of consideration when rating Horse Racing betting sites. Naturally, we want to see a wide variety of payment methods provided, with extra marks going to those sites that go above and beyond to cater for everyone by offering more niche options such a crypto payments.

Customer service 📞

Perhaps unsurprisingly, customer service is something that take into consideration. To feature in an article on Mrfixitstips, a betting site must offer a more than acceptable package in terms of customer service, offering multiple channels, such as email, phone, live chat, with a track record of providing a good service.

Key horse racing features

There are other things to consider when betting on horse racing such as the following.

Best odds guarantee

Best odds guaranteed (BOG) ensures that if the starting price (SP) of your horse is higher than the odds you took, you’ll be paid at the better price. This feature is available with bookmakers like BetVictor and William Hill.

Ante-post betting

Placing bets well in advance can offer better odds. However, the risk is that if your horse doesn’t run, you lose your stake—unless the bookmaker offers non-runner no bet, as Coral does for the Cheltenham Festival.

Live streaming

The majority of online betting platforms will offer live streaming on all UK and Irish horse races. These sites all have differing rules for allowing live streams. At some, you might need to spend a minimum of a £1 wager to access the live stream; others require a positive account balance, while there are some that simply ask that you have placed a bet within the past 24 hours.

Live betting

Unfortunately, it is impossible to live bet on horse races. This is due to the length of the events and is even true for longer races. Once the race is off, all bets have been made and no more will be accepted.
