It was a much better day at the office yesterday with Rizzel and myself landing a selection each to make it a profitable Monday for the thread.
Mehmar was given a lovely prominent ride by Colin Keane and stayed on well to win easily in the end. I felt a bit hard done by with my other selection Secret World. Joe Fanning got caught on the rail behind a couple of horses, which cost him some momentum in the run in. Once in the clear, she stayed on well to finish second, but I can't help but think If given a clear run she would have won. Swings and roundabouts, as they say, I'll not dwell on it too much though.
Toomuchforme was too much for the juvenile field at Ripon. Karl Burke is just mustard, especially with his younger horses, and this horse delivered after putting in a very poor debut effort. It was unfortunate that Kings Merchant didn't make it 2/2 for Rizzel. He gave it a good go from the front but was run down by Fortamour who is a course specialist as he secured his sixth win at Ripon.
Cairnzy's Tips
Spirit Of The Rose 2/1 – Ffos Las 4.15
Connections are probably becoming a tad frustrated with Spirit Of The Rose, who has failed to get the head in front in her first five outings for trainer Clive Cox. That said, she took a step in the right direction at Haydock in her most recent outing, by putting in a significantly improved display. She took a step back up in trip to 7 furlongs on that occasion, and the good ground conditions seemingly being more to her liking, having only raced on soft/heavy prior to that contest.
This looks like a pretty abysmal class 6 affair, and given Spirit Of The Rose has only raced five times during her career, she remains an exposed horse. She can hopefully take advantage and build upon her recent Haydock run and has ground conditions in her favor along with jockey Rossa Ryan in the saddle who takes over from Saffie Osbourne who rode my selection last time out. Monsieur Patat looks like the main danger on paper, and he's done well since changing hands to Adrian Wintle in April of this year. He's won twice and placed once in his last four runs for his new stable but has climbed the weights as a result, and he looks on a tough enough mark right now.
Havana Sky 14/1 EW – Chelmsford 7.47
I might be going a bit bonkers with this selection, but I can't help but think that Ed Dunlop's Havana Sky is a tad overpriced at 14/1. Bet365 is offering 4 places for this contest, and he looks worthy of a small each-way play at the prices.
Havana Sky remains a lightly raced horse at the age of three, having only run four times in his career, with three of those runs coming as a two-year-old. He didn't show much as a two-year-old, with the pick of his runs coming on debut when finishing fifth at Newcastle on the AW. Even on debut, he was soundly beaten 8L by the eventual winner, and as a whole, his juvenile campaign was quite disappointing.
Havana Sky was gelded over the summer of last year and made his seasonal return to the track last month as a three year old. He finished eighth in a nine-runner field, which doesn't look too appealing on paper. With that said, the finishing position doesn't tell the whole story. I caught a replay of the race and thought Havana Sky ran quite well, especially if you consider the 327 day layoff from the track. My selection traveled well for a long way in that contest, before fading in the final furlong after not seeing out the trip. That was his first attempt over 1m and he steps back down to 7f for this contest, which looks the right move given he only faded in the final furlong on his reappearance. Billy Loughnane is an eye-catching jockey booking, and I think he can outrun his odds of 14/1 with a recent outing under the belt.
Rizzel's Tips
Arkhalia Flynn – Ffos Las 4.50
After going through each horse in this race, I thought Arkhalia Flynn had a fantastic chance of winning this.
Two horses enter this race with wins next to their name (Salamanca Lad & Dashinwhitesargent), but I think they are very opposable, as are the others in this race. Salamanca Lad has been in fine form for the Kubler yard, recording a hat-trick, but he is slowly finding it tougher with each win, and with him carrying a 6lb penalty, I think that could be the final nail in the coffin for his winning run. The Hughie Morrison horse recorded an awful RPR for his rating, and based on that, he shouldn't be good enough.
Arkhalia Flynn has won a race this season, in the between two good efforts which saw him in the places. He is progressing, albeit at a slower rate than normal, but each start has been a sign of progression. I think connections found out that he was probably hitting his ceiling over 7f last time out, so the step up to a mile seems the correct call. In hindsight, his third-placed effort at Yarmouth last time out was still a very good effort. The winner produced an RPR of 90 (+12 to his hcp mark) and has since finished in the places behind one of my Monday selections (Kings Merchant). I think that race was a much tougher race than the one he contests today.
The other horses don't really stand out to me too much. The Rossa Ryan ridden horse is unexposed but looks in need of further and has his best form on softer ground, and the other Kubler horse doesn't really stand out to me.
Grecian Legacy – Catterick 2.15
I thought Grecian Legacy was an eyecatching runner for today's racing at Catterick in the opener as it's a rare runner at the course for joint racing partnership, Daniel & Claire Kubler.
This is just their fifth runner at the track, and though they are 0/4 currently, they normally do well when sending their horses on a decent length journey as their 3/9 at Carlisle and 2/4 At Beverley records would suggest. They aren't known for their juvenile runners either, with just four runs from their 2-year-old's this season, but Grecian Legacy ran an encouraging debut at Doncaster last time month at odds of 20/1 and showed enough to suggest he will be capable of winning races this season.
From the horses who have form in this race, they don't look to be very good. Grecian Legacy by far has made the best impession from those who have run, and I thought the booking of Tom Eaves was a positive one. Kevin Ryan is the trainer who Tom Eaves rides for the most, so it's intriguing that Tom has sacked off both of Kevin's newcomers, especially Archie's Dream who has a lovely pedigree, and has opted to ride Grecian Legacy. I'd have Kevin Ryan horse I've just mentioned as the main threat coming into this, but with the stable jockey on board my fancy, that's got to be a good indicator. Obviously, you can't fully write off the Karl Burke horse, as he showed yesterday when delivering me a 2-year-old winner at Ripon. However, this horse was 33/1 on debut and didn't show much, with his pedigree not looking the best.
my true love 11.30 ew Fairview well done all winners yesterday
* Spirit Of The Rose Non-Runner *
Non runners are winners 😂💰💰💰
Northern Ruler 6.40 Kempton tomorrow 6/5
1.5 point win very confident bet.
Was a really eye-catching run on debut. This extra 2 furlong will be perfect.
Yard red hot form 35% strike rate last 2 weeks with 12 from 34.
4 of the last 5 runners have won. 27% strike rate at the track in last 4 seasons.
Short price but still value imo. Extra half point on because very confident, not because its a short price.
Don’t lie 😂
No 6.40 race at Kempton tomorrow
It’s 6-40 Yarmouth.
6-5 at bet365 best price 4-5 elsewhere
