Israel vs Japan

, KO: 20:00 Jul 30, 2024, Stade de la Beaujoire
Japan

JAPAN are already through to the quarter-finals at the Olympics but Israel can still join them in the knockout stages if they can defeat the Group D leaders and the result in the other match goes their way.

This section looked like being one of the most competitive at the Games and that's how it has turned out with every team still in with a chance heading into the final match.

The Israelis currently sit bottom and are up against it after two late goals condemned them to a 4-2 loss against Paraguay as two bets landed for me.

Israel now need to beat the Japanese and hope the Paraguayans don't beat Mali in the other match. A draw in that game would be enough to see the Israelis pip Paraguay on goal difference with a win. But if both Mali and Israel win then it will come down to goal difference to see who goes through, with the Africans currently one goal better off.

With Japan keeping clean sheets in both their games so far, it's a tall order for Israel to beat them by a few goals. But they will have a go and the Asian giants might decide to rest a few players with their progress already assured.

How the bookies view it: Israel unfancied again

The Israelis have been outsiders for all their games so far and this one is no different with Betfred pricing them at 12/5. Japan are the 19/20 favourites and the draw pays 12/5.

Head to head: Who will be first time lucky?

These sides have never faced off before in international competition so new ground will be broken in Nantes.

Players to watch: Israel hoping to be Oscar winners

Forward Oscar Gloukh grabbed one of Israel's goals in their loss to Paraguay and they will need him to be on top form to stand a chance. The Red Bull Salzburg kid is capable of moments of magic and might be worth a bet for a goal once the bookies price up that market.

Rihito Yamamoto has scored in both games so far for Japan and will carry a threat again. Provided the St Truiden star isn't rested for this, he could be worth a punt for another goal.

Probable teams

Israel should be along similar lines to the team that came within a whisker of claiming of another draw against Paraguay. Japan might be tempted to freshen things up a bit ahead of their quarter-final as their goal difference means top spot is pretty much guaranteed even with a defeat.

Japan: Kokubo, Sekine, Kimura, Takai, Ohata, Saito, Mito, Hirakawa, Yamamoto, Fujito, Fujio.

Israel: Niron; Feingold, Goldberg, Lemkin, Ben Harosh; Gandelman, Gloukh, Abada, Shahar, Turgemon; Azoulay

Anything else catch the eye?

Japan have yet to conceded a goal but they had an escape against Mali as Cheickna Doumbia missed a stoppage-time penalty to scupper one of my bets. Israel need to go for it as they bid to sneak through so I fancy a few goals in this one.

Over 2.5 goals pays 4/5 while BTTS is 4/6 but combining those picks in a bet builder will get you above evens.

With Japan already secured top spot in the group they may relax a little so backing Israel to win either half could pay off at 5/4.
